User complaints about small browser action icons after Material Design |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: 55.0.2883.87 m OS: Win I asked for some feedback on a Reddit thread after users asked about how to switch Material Design off. https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/5idvlk/is_there_a_way_to_turn_off_chromes_material_design/ After the omnibox font size, the #2 top complaint was the smaller size of browser actions, making it impossible to read icons that include an unread count badge. * In addition to the resounding complaint that the text in the address bar is too small, I'd like to add another issue: I have extensions which display numbers, and these numbers are also far too small to read anymore * Even the Gmail Checker extension mail count is nearly impossible to read * Honestly, the address bar and tab text are fine, but badges on extension icons look fucking awful now. I don't know what size or resolution of monitors you guys develop on, but on my 27" 1080p monitor, the text on the badges is so small as to be practically unreadable at my normal viewing distance of ~2 feet. This is at 100% display scaling in Windows, BTW. * The extensions in the upper right is to small to see (numbers) and u have to strain ur eyes to see. * Undersized address bar font, undersized extension icons. And these butt ugly counters on extension icons, sometimes they aren't even centered properly. * Seriously, it's not even a matter of personal taste, the new design makes the top bar font way too small and completely fucks up my extensions bar. Every issue you opened in regards to MD accessibility affects Chrome OS too. (except for the context menu one)

I agree strongly with this complaint. I would be happy to see folks push harder on bug 649054. @dmazzoni, if there's a way to express legibility in measurable numbers, perhaps we can score the old vs. new interfaces somehow to concretely say "yeah this is less legible".

I think the particular issue here is that extension badges were designed to be right at the threshold of readability before, so reducing the icon size necessarily pushes tons of users below that readability threshold. Was it a deliberate decision to make browser action icons smaller in M55?

Yes, it was. But I'm not convinced the badging effects were deliberate, only the overall icon changes. I think we could be a lot more readable at the current icon size by increasing the font stroke thickness in the badge (for example).

Got it. I forgot that the badge size is entirely under our control. It looks like there's no reason we couldn't increase the badge size independently of the icon size. That said, from the other bug (omnibox text size), it looks like a significant minority of users are seeing everything smaller in M55. That may be a bug, they may be getting browser actions that are smaller than the UI designers intended.

That may be true, but I think that's independent of the real issue here that, for people who are seeing everything "as we intended", badge text is less readable in MD. |
