Open Link in New Tab constantly creates "Aw, Snap" crashes on Mac

Reported by zhangk...@gmail.com, Dec 13 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/55.0.2883.87 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Search for something on Google
2. Right-click a link and open it in new tab
3. The Aw, Snap page appears
Open New Tab(chrome://newtab) , History(chrome://history) , Settings(chrome://settings) and other chrome urls creates the same Aw,Snap page sometimes

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
Opening links in New Tab will display the "Aw, Snap" page, and afterwards opening a new tab will also get the same crash.

This sometimes happens together when inputing an URL and hit ENTER, but the browser doesn't respond. Pressing reload button simply clears the URL Bar. I'll have to hit Enter for 3-5 times before the webpage loads, and after it loads, when I click on the link and open in New Tab, I encounter the aforementioned issue.

Crashed report ID:

How much crashed? Just one tab

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? Yes 54.x

Chrome version: 55.0.2883.87 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.12.1
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 24.0 r0

I didn't install any plugin.

No crashes was detected in chrome://crashes
A ton of other Mac users are also affected by the same issue!

+mark for bpoop issues -- is there a way that the renderer could crash at some early point, where we can't get a crash report?

Comment 8 by mark@chromium.org, Jan 3 2017

Negative. Not on Mac, anyway.
We're seeing this pretty widespread on osx 10.11.5. Nothing in chrome://crashes. happy to help troubleshoot if we can provide any information.
Can you check ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Crashpad/completed and attach any .dmp files from when this occurs?
@rsesek - we have a few dozen users reporting the issue. I suspect it's many more users, and they're just working around it.

So far, the machines in question the crashpad/completed folder is empty.

Anything in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports for Google Chrome, Google Chrome Helper, or crashpad_handler, at around the times of the Aw, Snaps?
nothing for google in DiagnosticReports - only thing dated today is related to com.apple.webkit
just FYI I don't know if it's coincidence or just a temporary fix, but so far techs have found that doing the following has helped users
--

1. Have Chrome open and running
2.	Export bookmarks
3.	Go to the chrome menu and choose preferences
4.	Scroll down to where it says people
5.	Click on “Add person” this will create a person 2 profile
6.	Then you can remove the person 1 profile because you will be on as person 2
7.	Import bookmarks back in.

FYI I encouraged our staff to start reporting the issue as it happens via help - report a problem and mentioning Issue 651989 per link below

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chromebook-central/e2MAzw-AgMs;context-place=topicsearchin/chromebook-central/aw$2C$20snap

One of our PC users also reported it, but I haven't been able to reproduce.

Thanks.

If you can also check the root /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports for anything interesting, that could help. There’s a chance that a breadcrumb may have wound up in there.

I confirmed there's nothing Google/Chrome related in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports
