Feature: iOS user switching

Reported by martin.t...@gmail.com, Dec 10 2016

Issue description

Chrome Version (from "Settings > About Google Chrome"): 55.0.2883.79
Device Type: (iPad 2, iPhone 4, etc): iPad Pro
URLs (if applicable):

Behavior in Safari (if applicable):

Steps to reproduce:
(1) Open the Chrome menu, choose settings >> (account name) >> sync
(2) Under 'sync to', select the account you want to switch to
(3) In the 'import data' pop up, choose 'keep existing data separate'

Expected result:
The current process is very clunky. For the use case of having two accounts on one device (e.g. One work and one personal account) it's not very practical to switch between them regularly. Something more like the quick use switching available in the desktop version of Chrome would be very useful.

This essentially boils down to requesting multi-profile on iOS. My understanding is that with the introduction of WKWebView, multi-profile on iOS is not technically possible.

I'm closing this out as WontFix (due to the above). Cc'ing some Bling folks that can correct me if that understanding is wrong.

You are right, Eli. Chrome iOS cannot support multi-profile.
I have to disagree about this. Multi-profile is clearly possible on iOS, Chrome is doing it already. It may be that you are clearing out all the data for one profile before switching to another behind the scenes? However it is achieved, why can't the existing controls for switching be put in a more prominent place on the UI? Maybe an entry in the top level menu that says 'Switch sync account', when you tap it goes to a modal box with the available accounts, and a caption saying something like 'Switching sync accounts will close all open tabs'. Could this not be achieved using the same mechanism you have at the moment?
Perhaps the confusion is around the 'multi-profile' idea. If iOS can't support having two profiles 'active' at the same time, a more convenient way of switching from one to the other, perhaps it could still be useful to be able to switch more quickly, even if that means closing all your tabs from the other profile.

It is not clear to me what you mean when you say "Multi-profile is clearly possible on iOS, Chrome is doing it already". Chrome iOS does not do multi-profile. Please keep in mind that multi-profile is not the same thing as switching sync accounts on Chrome iOS.

Chrome iOS cannot support multi-profile due to limitations of the platform. For example, we cannot safely separate the cookies of 2 profiles as the platform only uses a single cookie storage for all the web views. In a multi-profile environment, this means that we would see cookie leakage between profiles which is unacceptable.

The feature request is essentially to make the "switch sync account" UI (which, as pointed out in #7, isn't exactly the same thing as "multi-profile") more prominent on mobile.

Switching sync accounts is not something that happens frequently across all users. Most users only have one sync account.

We actually recently built the current UI specifically to better support users who do have multiple sync accounts (it was impossible to switch sync accounts before without signing out of Chrome and signing back in with a different account). However, we can't make the UI any more prominent than it already is for now, since it's used by a relatively small subset of people.

We appreciate your feedback! We are constantly trying to improve our UI to support all our users' needs, and we will continue to examine this UI to think about whether there's anything better we can do.
