Capturing a browser window with java.awt.Robot results in a black image

Issue description

Chrome Version (from the about:version page): 55.0.2883.75
Is this the most recent version: yes
OS + version: Debian 8.6 (jessie)
CPU architecture (32-bit / 64-bit): 64 bit
Window manager: MATE 1.8.1

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Start up Chrome
(2) Switch to another persona
(3) Take a screenshot using java and java.awt.Robot

What is the expected result?
The generated screenshot displays the content of the browser window


What happens instead?
The generated screenshot is black where the content of the browser window should be

I've been running tests using Sikuli against web applications for a long time without any issue. After updating Chrome to 55 the tests stopped working and by digging a bit around it all boiled down to java.awt.Robot not being able to capture the browser window. Reverting back to the previous Chrome version (54.0.2840.100) fixed the problem.
What's interesting here is that if I start up chrome and run tests against that browser window everything works fine, if I switch to another persona and then run tests the screen capture doesn't work. The content of about:gpu is the same for both personas.
The issue had been replicated on 2 different laptops.

Does it happen if you run chrome with --ui-disable-partial-swap ?

There is a workaround entry for partial swaps on mesa drivers, that is based on GL_VENDOR/GL_RENDERER. Those are cached in the profile on the first (and subsequent) runs, and there is a race where we may not apply workarounds if the information is not available at startup. I suspect it could be related.
