Cannot install any extensions - "Json error"

Project Member Reported by rob@robwu.nl, Dec 2 2016

Issue description

Multiple users have reporting that they cannot install extensions (from the Chrome Web Store), due to a "Json error". I haven't reproduced the issue myself. The reports below are all from Windows users (8, 8.1, 10).

From https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pdf-viewer/oemmndcbldboiebfnladdacbdfmadadm/support

Chrome 54.0.2840.99, Windows 8.1 (11/24/16 1:16 PM, UTC-8)
"My build in PDF viewer is missing. so I tried to download PDF viewer again. But it stated Json error. May i know what should i do?"

Chrome 54.0.2840.99, Windows 8 (11/26/16 11:01 PM, UTC-8):
(...) What's worse is that now I can't even add PDF Viewer to chrome due to some error on your end. (...)

From https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/5cr5qy/cant_install_any_extension_or_theme_image_decode/
(Sun Nov 13 18:10:33 2016 UTC - note that the reporter edited the post and claimed that the issue disappeared. Currently the stable Chrome version is still 54.0.2840.99, so the issue was not "fixed" by some update)
Several days ago, when I tried to install a new extension in Chrome 54.0.2840.99 on Windows 10 x64, an error message appeared: "Image decode faled". When I tried to install a new theme, the error message said "Json error".

I've tried changing my account, resetting the default settings, reinstalling Chrome, using a different internet connection, changing DNS settings, using a VPN/proxy, no effect at all. Now I'm stuck without my extensions (disappeared after reinstallation) and unable to install any of them from the Chrome Store.

From https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/C7n0fgtj8sg
(Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 10:03:47 AM UTC+1 - Windows 10, Chrome 54 stable)
I've recently bought a new laptop and since installing chrome on it, I've been unable to download any extensions off the chrome web store. All I get is an error message for a "Json error" and nothing else.
(...)
I have reinstalled, reset my chrome settings, tried on different chrome log ins and no log ins, and nothing works.

The only source of the "Json error" message is SafeJsonParserImpl::OnConnectionError

Bisecting might be a bit difficult due to the lack of a consistently reproducible test case (my extension has 600k users and only two of them reported the issue).

By reporting this, I was hoping that someone would recognize these symptoms and publish a fix.
I'll change the error message to be a bit more descriptive, but if this is really coming from SafeJsonParserImpl::OnConnectionError() (which make sense), theres not much we can do without a repro.

It basically means that the utility process crashed or never started..

Unable to reproduce the Issue on Win 10 using 54.0.2940.99 and latest stable 55.0.2883.75.Removed the Needs-bisect label till we have a consistent repro for the same.

The following revision refers to this bug:
  https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src.git/+/887e54f79784fa655609c00f3f03940a043f39a8

commit 887e54f79784fa655609c00f3f03940a043f39a8
Author: pmonette <pmonette@chromium.org>
Date: Wed Dec 07 19:47:49 2016

Changed the SafeJsonParser connection error message.

The previous error message was too generic, making it harder to find the
culprit for the "Json error".

We can take the fix for M56, if all looks good.
Sorry if this wasn't clear but I didn't fix this. I merely changed a string.

We won't be able to fix this without a repro, as we don't know what's happening.
Just to update:

Still unable to reproduce the issue on win10 chrome version 54.0.2840.99 and 55.0.2883.75 - extensions (eg: pdf viewer) installed fine from webstore.

Removing RBS, since we need a repro for followup.

Gentle Ping!, Could anyone provide us with consistent repro steps for further triaging.

FYI, as stated in the report, I cannot personally reproduce the problem. I have only seen reports from other users.

Comment 15 by rob@robwu.nl, Feb 27 2017

The patch from comment 5 landed in Chrome 57, while the current stable is 56.

The Reddit post from the initial report contains a new comment (from last month) from another user (so the issue may still be valid):

| Any update on this? I'm experiencing the same problem.

||| As I've said in the edit, everything went back to normal the following morning. Never managed to figure out what exactly caused the problem and how it fixed itself.
||| I hope you can find a solution to this.

|||||| OK, thanks anyway
