Add scroll wheel to list of profiles in user menu when necessary |
|||||||||
Issue descriptionOn Windows and Linux, the User Menu cannot be rendered completely when the browser window is too short for it to fit. Since realistically this is only an issue when the list of profiles is very long, the User Menu height should be capped at the window's height and the user switching portion (not the entire Menu) should be scrollable when appropriate. This way the Current Profile section and the "Manage People"/"Go Incognito" buttons are always visible, and all profiles are accessible. Here's an awesome ASCII diagram of that layout, with S representing the position/vertical span of the scrollbar container: +-----------------+ | Current Profile | | | +-----------------+ | Profile 1 S| +----------------S+ | Profile 2 S| +-----------------+ | Manage People | +-----------------+ | Go Incognito | +-----------------+

Yep, makes sense. Agreed we should just collapse the profile list, and keep the buttons at the bottom (including Exit & Childlock, if present) should always be visible.

Broadening the description of this bug slightly. On Views platforms, the user menu gets cut off at the size of the containing Chrome window. However on Mac, it also gets cut off eventually (at the size of the screen). We should add a scroll wheel to the list of profiles in the user menu whenever the buttons at the bottom would be cutoff. Marking as Available since this is low priority.

Just adding a couple of comments on here that we've seen a couple of users report this on the Chrome help forum so it's all documented in one place: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/Pq29-p8T-o0 https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/PHJzv5cz16w I'm also able to reproduce the issue using Canary 57.0.2964.0 using OSX 10.12.2. When I have 15 profiles or less at maximum Chrome window size, I can still select all profiles, guest, and access the "manage people" button. Once I have 16 profiles or more at maximum window size, I can only access the first 15 profiles and guest but any additional profiles + the "manage people" button gets cut off and there's no ability to scroll within the profile switcher. Screenshots attached.

You should also split list in more columns, adpoting a responsive solution. Thanks.

Interacts with issue 130656 'close all windows', which goes in the static set at the end of the list. See also issue 683405 - which advocates moving 'Exit and lock' to Settings/ On Startup preferences.

Have you got some news about it? I've ended the list space :(

I can not change "People" if there are more than 16 (for example in my dpi) Disappears the opportunity to choose "People" if there are more than 16. Also, I can not click "manage people" and other buttons below. Scroll does not help. Previously (Chrome 55), it was possible to open the "Manage people" and select it.

Not all of those issues are duplicates of this issue. For example, Issue 567238 and Issue 445219 are both about the *user manager* not showing more than 8 profiles (which, it's worth noting, we've actually already fixed). This issue is about the *user menu* not being able to scroll, if the list of profiles extends past the edge of the browser window. The Chrome Signin team is extremely short-staffed, at the moment. We have a *huge* backlog of bugs, some of which are higher priority than others. We're doing our best to address them all as quickly as we can. At the moment, this is not a high priority issue for the team, based on the number of affected users and given the number of other issues we're working on.

I understand about scheduling bug priorities. But unfortunately when this issue happens, the "Manage People" link is also pushed off the screen and users are unable to reach the nice user manager that has the scrollbar. Could a consideration for a quick fix be put "Manage People" first before all profiles?
,
Mar 21 2017
We wouldn't want to put the "Manage people" button first (that would make a lot of users that rely on quickly switching between profiles by clicking on the list of profile names in that list very unhappy). I think the correct solution here is to put a scrollbar on the list of profile names (as the original author of the bug suggested), but that will take some time. Once MD settings rolls out, you'll also be able to go from the Chrome settings page to the user manager (you can try it out yourself at chrome://md-settings and clicking on "Manage other people"). Also worth nothing that this isn't a regression, as far as I know. I don't believe we've ever rendered a scrollbar in the user menu.

Yes Profile Management is accessible from settings too. To open new profile chrome we need a list scrool (or please add the action "open" in the profile management setting). Thanks

+some desktop folks The signin team isn't going to have the bandwidth to take this bug on any time in the immediate future. Putting this on your radar in case someone on the desktop team has the time to look into adding a scrollbar to the user menu.

Little update: with the release 59 we can access on a profile also via person management setting. It isn't so usable, but it's a way. I repeat: it would be enough a scroll. Going to chrome://settings/ and clicking [Manage other people] works as a work around. would be great to get what pops up there as what appears when you click the [current profile] button top right instead of a dropdown that's too long (for users like me who help manage lots of people's stuff at their request).
