It looks like Java8 has some standard routines for this (Math.multiplyExact, Math.addExact), but I'm not sure what version of Java Android uses atm (I'm pretty sure it's not Java8 though).

This issue has been Available for over a year. If it's no longer important or seems unlikely to be fixed, please consider closing it out. If it is important, please re-triage the issue.
