Issue description
Chrome Version : 54.0.2840.98 (64-bit)
Other browsers tested:
Safari: OK
Firefox: OK
IE:
What steps will reproduce the problem?
(*) Browsing a lot of websites with rich media [video] for long periods of time
What is the expected result?
Chrome stays fast, responsive, and doesn't use the heaping majority of my system memory.
What happens instead?
The longer and more websites I browse, the slower [and more memory used] Chrome becomes. I can close all tabs and continue browsing in a single tab and the memory usage remains at high levels. This will persist over several days and even between my machine going to sleep/standby mode at night.
I noticed the Chrome process-named items in the OSX activity monitor were using up to 50% of my system memory (16GB) - When I quit Chrome and closed it entirely, the memory was freed up and worked fine once restarting the browser.
Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

I can confirm this same sexperience with my Macbook Pro retina 13" running Chrome v53 as well. It's especially laggy when visiting websites with video (i attend online college courses so a lot of video).

Unable to reproduce the issue in MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) 10.11.16 by using chrome reported version #54.0.2840.98 and latest canary #57.0.2926.0. Steps followed to reproduce the issue are as follows: ----------- 1. Launched chrome browser. 2. Opened more than 7 video sites in different tabs. 3. Observed that chrome stayed fast, responsive, and did not use any heaping majority of system memory as expected. Attaching screen cast for reference. coryrobinson42@ - Could you please check this issue on latest canary #57.0.2926.0 by creating a new profile without any apps and extensions and please let us know if the issue still persist or not.

x7 video sites is not enough to reproduce this issue. I experience it specifically when I'm watching online courses for schooling and I go through ~50-60 videos that are 2-8min each. I suspect it has something to do with the gradual increase in buffered videos form the video players in the browser tabs over time consume resources.

mac triage: assigning to ccameron@ ccameron@, is this worth investigating? Are there known memory leaks/etc?

Can you send screenshots of Chrome's Task window so that we can see the processes and their memory allocations? Especially for the case "I can close all tabs and continue browsing in a single tab and the memory usage remains at high levels"?

Please also grab a memory-infra trace: https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/master/docs/memory-infra/README.md

This is the activity when it's lagging after browsing through ~20 sites with embedded video

Please choose Window -> Task Manager from Chrome and take a screenshot (or screenshots at different times) of that panel.

What happens if you kill the GPU Process (you can do this in Chrome's task manager). What version of OS X are you running? Is it 10.9? We've had some issues with VideoToolbox causing leaks there (see issue 611310 ).

Killing the GPU process makes things work smoothly again.

It is likely that this was one of the large / persistent memory leaks fixed recently (such as issue 861939 ). I'm calling this Fixed - the memory infra team will open new bugs for specific leaks identified in the field. |
