Extension hangs after not being in use for a while on Mac only

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/54.0.2840.98 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Install Checker Plus for Google Drive https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/checker-plus-for-google-d/pppfmbnpgflleackdcojndfgpiboghga
2. Wait for several hours or perhaps when returning from standby
3. Click the extension button or try to open it's options

What is the expected behavior?
The popup opens or the options window.

What went wrong?
The action just hangs.

Did this work before? Yes 

Does this work in other browsers? N/A

Chrome version: 54.0.2840.98  Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.12.1
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 23.0 r0

Unable to reproduce the issue on mac 10.11.6 chrome version 54.0.2840.98 - The popup opens on clicking the extension button after few hours (4 hours approx)

My assumption is after perhaps a day of non extension use. Note that our Mac usually goes into idle/standby mode several times a day (which is normal since were not always on it) and I presume the issue happens after a couple of those standbys.

What solves the issue temporarily is to disable/renable the extension or restarting the browser.

When the extension crashes for me, I see a balloon that offers me to click to reload the extension (if I don't click, I need to go to chrome://extensions and enable it)

Today I updated my Chrome to the new v55.
Now the extension crashes much more, randomly
Before: sometimes crashed when clicking the extension icon. 
Now: crashing when nothing interesting happens - just reading stuff in the page.

Can you provide some "Server ID"s from chrome://crashes from when this happens?

but once I removed and reinstalled the extension, the frequent crashes that happened with v55 stopped.

Could you share information about the name of the extension? The other bug seems to imply that the extension is CheckerPlus.
