Label Printing Issue in Chrome - Letters Are Disappearing When Printing

Reported by ljac...@fivebase.com, Nov 10 2016

Issue description

Chrome Version : 54.0.2840.71
OS Version: 10.0
URLs (if applicable) :
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
     Safari 5:
  Firefox 4.x:
     IE 7/8/9:

What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. Open HTML document in attached zip file (browser displays the labels that are to be printed)
2. Ctrl - P (open chrome print screen)
3. Set layout to: Portrait, 4 x 1.5 and no margins, should print as seen.
4. Press "Print" and here is picture of what the zebra printer printed.

What is the expected result?

You print labels from label printer (Zebra Printer ZP 450 200dpi), labels contain all letters/content like it does when printing from Firefox.

What happens instead of that?

You print labels from label printer (Zebra Printer ZP 450 200dpi), labels are missing some of the letters/content that was visible on the screen and in the print preview window.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

Etc: You can ignore the cutoff portions, I believe that's a scale to fit issue unrelated to this text disappearing.

I tried the test case on Windows 10 (54.0.2840.71 (Official Build) m (64-bit)), and the print preview, and test print looks OK.

The HTML/CSS on those letters is not special or remarkable, they all have the same style.

I don't have access to the label printer used in the bug report though.

@ ljacobs - I think it was mentioned in https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=132239#c82 that this works when using Firefox? Did it ever work from Chrome? Also - can you also please confirm that you've got the latest drivers etc for your printer?

Since styling and layout look OK here, I suspect this is the PDF generation doing something different to Firefox.

Is this bug 658606 ? i.e. does it go away when you update to Chrome 54.0.2840.99 (check for an update and see) or if you rn Chrome with the --disable-gdi-text-printing command line flag?
Labels: Needs-Feedback
I asked the clients the following questions:

1. Are the printer drivers up to date?

2. Did this ever work in Chrome, and then stop working? Or has it always not worked?
3. Is Chrome up to date and, more specifically, past version 54.0.2840.99?

4. Does it happen if you run Chrome with the --disable-gdi-text-printing command line flag? ( windows key -> type "run" -> open "run" app -> copy/paste or type in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --disable-gdi-text-printing" )

And received the following in response:

1. Yes. downloaded the newest from Zebra for Windows 10, we have a Windows 7 machine in receiving that was doing the same thing (drivers were up to date)

2. Yes..Right around the time that we had the CSS issues with Chrome. Sept 20th.

3. No.. I was on the past version, (Version 54.0.2840.99 m was released on Wednesday, ( I have been hesitant on jumping on the update since the CSS issue)).. Updating to the new version seems to fix the issue.
stopped.

So from that, it looks like the issue stopped. Likely it was identical to bug 658606 as suggested previously by @thestig and can be resolved/closed.

Thank you all for your time.
