Chrome OS / Chromebook complete shutdown once at 34% second time at 24% battery left

Reported by dymp...@gmail.com, Nov 2 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS armv7l 8743.76.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/54.0.2840.79 Safari/537.36
Platform: 8743.76.0 (Official Build) stable-channel veyron_minnie

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Battery gets to 34% or 24%
2. Chromebook shuts down
3. Try to restart > white chrome screen flash > shut down
4. Plug in the charger > can sign in > fixed

What is the expected behavior?
Chromebook should not shut down completely

What went wrong?
2 complete shut downs. That should not happen before, I think, 10% battery is left and a notification with an intended shutdown at 3% or less.

"chrome didn't shut down correctly" error messages should have produced crash IDs

Crashed report ID: NO chrome://crashes seems to be broken

How much crashed? Whole browser

Is it a problem with a plugin? No

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 54.0.2840.79 Channel: stable
OS Version: 8743.76.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 23.0 r0

6 or more tries to turn on and sign in > shutdown
Tried refresh + power
Tried power button and opening lid
Sometimes profile pic would show before shutdown

Noticed WiFi had problems > turned off > signed in

I'm now submitting feedback without WiFi
Noticing Hangouts app keeps trying to connect even though I closed out of it several times

Am now online but did not get confirmation that feedback was sent i.e. Thanks for your feedback.

All of this is happening on battery only.

None of this is happening with the same account on the Acer 15, on battery and on the same Stable channel.

Comment 11 by dymp...@gmail.com, Nov 17 2016

Feedback sent 4:38pm EST I think from floppysocks gmail but I'm not sure because of the issue below.

Two user profiles - signed in to only one from sign-in screen - floppysocks in status area

floppysocks window - Drive and Inbox

dymphe window - Drive, Chromebook Central forum, Inbox

SHUTDOWN CRASH

Had to plug in power to restart > sign in to floppysocks only > restore session

There are now 3 new app icons on the shelf. They are NOT floppysocks the signed in user profile apps. They are dymphe owner profile icons for Keep, Inbox and Hangouts

The Hangouts icon is not the app but the webpage hangouts.google.com and signed in as dymphe.
The Keep icon is the webpage added as app to the shelf not the app. The app is signed into floppysocks. See screenshot.
Inbox is the the blue G icon website added as app to the shelf.

Something is very wrong here. Since starting this issue, I have powerwashed twice and reset sync via the Dashboard.

USB restored to version 53.0.2785.144. Same issues.

After a shutdown and restart I'm now signed out of sites consistently.
Started this bug. There are other CBC users with the same update issue.

Asus Flip cannot change channels and will not update https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=666747

Feedback sent 1:35pm EST # Issue 661768 Shutdown crash

Right before crash I had to sign in to Google account again even though I gad just done so.

1st time with 2 step verification > do not ask again on this device
2nd time without 2 step

Still on battery but at least I could sign in again.

# Issue 661768
Shutdown crash while on battery > can not sign in while on battery at about 2:35 pm

Shutdown at first after sign in screen appeared but with every power button restart the shutdowns came faster until after about 7 times just a flash of not even a light > black screen for less than a second

As soon as the Flip is connected to power it signs in fine.

The crash happened with these window and tabs open.
Hangouts, 2 crbug, 2 CBC, 1 Doc, Keep was minimized.

Clicked on T for Trello > shutdown

Comment 16 by dymp...@gmail.com, Nov 18 2016

Shutdown was actually closer to 2:20pm. Was able to sign in one time > took some screenshots after I clicked restore.

Comment #15 is the second and last shutdown after restoring the session.

Power is plugged in but now the screenshot I took can not be displayed.

#sssue 661768

On battery > turned off via status area power icon
after sending the last feedback.

On battery > turned on > had to 2 step verification sign in (again)

Something happens when the CB shuts down crashes while on battery that eventually leads to being signed out of my Google account.
Sometimes I can restart and sign in a couple of times while still on battery, sometimes I can't and can only sign in with the charger plugged in.

Tried to copy and paste feedback text to Keep before sending feedback. Was not signed in. Even after clicking sign in > pasted text > closed Keep > reopened > text was not saved and it's asking me to sign in again.

Tried to open Drive right after sending feedback 8:05 pm > shutdown crash.

Clicked power button 4 times in video to restart > flashing screens. https://goo.gl/photos/UHdWt15gkRkd8cYP7

Plugged in to power > yellow triangle > 2 step verification again even though this CB is set to not ask again.

Was signed into Keep.

Forgot to say that only one tab was open hangouts.google.com.
Yesterday, the CB was on battery power all day > restarted and sleep several times without issues.
Opened hangouts tab and within 30 minutes > shutdown at 6:30 pm. Tried to send feedback while on battery after it did restart but hit send > shutdown > PO'd
I've been running with all extensions disabled, including Docs offline

# Issue 661768 Chromebook shut down inexplicably

1. restart with power button > white chrome screen flash > shutdown -tried several times. Also tried lid open and close.

2. refresh+power button > same as above

3. esc+refresh+power button > got the recovery screen > turned off CB

4. power button > sign-in screen > typed password > shutdown - tried several times

5. power button > sign-in screen > turned off WiFi > signed in

6. did not click on restore > opened new tab > closed restore tab

7. Turned on WiFi > am online, signed in and typing feedback

8. hit send on feedback > shut down

8. plugged in power > typing feedback again because I don't think it was sent

Comment 22 by dymp...@gmail.com, Nov 26 2016

Feedback sent from the ACER 15 not the Flip.

I think because of the Flip issues and therefore the issues have to be sync related.

13:05 pm (or around that time)

Sign-in error Chrome OS could not sync your data

Signed out and in with the first notification (see screenshot) but that did not fix sign-in details.

Clicked on advanced sync settings > failed to start up the sync backend.

Apps on shelf have not synced, except for one "E" icon the rest are generic Google apps - missing Inbox, Trello and a Google Sheet (added to shelf)
App folders in the apps launcher are gone

Before this, I was trying to reboot the Chromecast >
chrome://cast/#devices/ > continuous search for trying to find device > I shutdown and restarted CB > fixed chromecast issue but had sign in error.

This may be related to the issues on the Asus Flip, which I believe are also account sync related and not a battery failure. Issue 166178

Right now, can open Trello but is hanging completely
Can not copy and paste in Trello but into Caret OK
Am not signed into Keep

Shutdown and restart > sign in as if powerwashed > gmail + password + 2-step verification > sync successful > all apps on shelf and app folders in launcher.
Still having trouble with Trello.com
Keep is OK

Should we look at serial #'s to see if it's a batch defect?

Comment 29 by derat@chromium.org, Jan 31 2017

Are there multiple problems being discussed here? If so, please file a separate issue for each problem.

If you're still seeing the system shut down unexpectedly, please log in immediately after rebooting (if possible) and file a feedback report with Alt+Shift+i.

Comment 30 by dymp...@gmail.com, Feb 2 2017

@derat, I'm going to open up the Asus Flip and see if there's a loose battery connection or something. I've been using the Flip connected to power at all times because I got tired of it shutting down in the middle of doing something.

Yes, there are several separate problems. Counting in my comments, I've sent 19 feedback reports with alt+shift+i.
Thanks for the details (and all the reports)!

Yes, if you're not seeing a black screen with a red battery icon as the device shuts down, it's unfortunately probably a hardware issue of some sort rather than the software incorrectly thinking that the battery suddenly dropped to a low level.

Thinking at least some of the failures/symptoms sound like

   crbug.com/696055

Do you use offline docs sync? If so disable and see if it works around failure.

Going to dupe to that for now.
