node --inspect DevTools Console doesn't show anything in console

Reported by ameenudd...@booking.com, Nov 2 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/54.0.2840.71 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
Create a file test.js with console.log("Hello World");

Run node --inspect --debug-brk test.js

On the console tab, I can't execute code. Even console.log doesn't work.

It starts working when I change the chrome-debug URL query param from ws=localhost:9229/node to ws=127.0.0.1:9229/node

This problem appears only on Windows 7 and not on Mac OS.

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
I made a small video to explain the problem better.

Please ignore the first problem, it works when I use the nightly build of nodeJS October 31st.

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 54.0.2840.71 Channel: stable
OS Version: 7
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 23.0 r0

A similar problem was posted where the remote debugger doesn't seem to work. In my case it doesn't work when the host is localhost.

I think it is not treating localhost as 127.0.0.1

This seems to be an issue with Windows7 setup. Searching the web provides a number of ways to resolve that.

On the Node side, I uploaded the patch (https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/9451) that will change to prompt to advertise 127.0.0.1 as a host name. No changes are needed on the Chrome side.
