High Contrast Extension - issues with page drawing

Reported by john.pia...@gmail.com, Nov 1 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/49.0

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Enable "high contrast" feature on any web page that causes the page to be drawon on dynamically.
2. Use the mouse to select some text, or type text. See nothign is displayed.
3. Use the scroll bar to scroll up or down, and see that the page is refreshed, and your text/selection is now shown

What is the expected behavior?
I expect to be able to see things change as i interact with the page.

What went wrong?
The page is not drawn, and so your interaction is not visible. This appears to be because the page is not dynamically drawing its current state.

I noticed it happens on pages that use Javascript to draw on the page, and also happens with Flash video - the video will playh, and you hear the sound, but the video is frozen. If I use the up/down arrows to scroll the page up/down, that forced the page to draw, and the latest video frame is shown. Rapidly scrolling up/down/up/down allows you to see the video as the page is rapidly redrawn.

WebStore page: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/high-contrast/djcfdncoelnlbldjfhinnjlhdjlikmph?hl=en

Did this work before? Yes Version 53

Chrome version: 54.0.2840.71 (64-bit) Channel: stable
OS Version: Ubuntu 14.4 LTS
Flash Version: Version: 23.0.0.205

This only happens with the High Contrast extension is enabled, and only with Chrome 54. I downgraded to Chrome 53, and the problem disappeared. This happens on Both Windows and Linux Ubuntu o/s.

This issue looks similar to the bug #658513 and hence duplicating it.

Actually, this issue is not the same as 658513. That issue was about slow performance on certain web pages, when typing text. THis issue is to do with dynamic drawing of the web page. Please read the description again.

Either way you look at it, The High Contrast extension has been broken with the upgrade from Chrom 53 to 54.

Tested the issue on Mac 10.11.6 using chrome Stable M54 #54.0.2840.87 and issue is reproduced.

Steps tried to reproduce:

1. Added extension High contrast extension to chrome
2. Navigated to sample url "www.youtube.com " and typed any word on the search box
3. Observed that nothing is seen on search box , until page is scrolled.

Observations:

1. In M54 #54.0.2840.26 , Issue is not seen and considered it as good build .
2. From #54.0.2840.27 to #54.0.2840.0 , when High contrast extension is enabled , page doesn't load . Hence considered 54.0.2840.27 as bad build.

Provided per-revision bisect considering the builds:

Good Build : 54.0.2840.26 (Revision : 411209)
Bad Build : 54.0.2840.27 (Revision : 411497)

From the above CL , suspecting the change and assigning the owner

@senorblanco - Could you please check whether this is caused with respect to your change, if not please help us in assigning it to the right owner.

A friendly reminder that M55 Stable is launch is coming soon! Your bug is labelled as Stable ReleaseBlock, pls make sure to land the fix and get it merged into the release branch ASAP so it gets enough baking time in Beta (before Stable promotion). Thank you!

Also due to Thanksgiving holidays in US, please make sure all fixes are ready and merged to M55 latest by 5:00 PM PT Friday, 11/18/16.
I've pushed a new version of the High Contrast extension with a workaround to the web store.

Can anyone confirm this fixes the issue for them? I tested it manually and the workaround seems to solve the problem. Visit your extensions page and manually refresh. The updated version of High Contrast is 0.9.3.

If verified, we can remove the releaseblock but keep the bug assigned to @senorblanco because the underlying issue with CSS filters may affect other sites too.

Verified the issue on Ubuntu 14.04, Mac OS 10.12 and Windows-10 using chrome latest Beta M55-55.0.2883.44 by following steps mentioned in the original comment. Observed no issues in loading page, typing text, copying text and scrolling up and down. Hence removing RB-Stable and adding TE-Verified label.
