Chrome window can't be shown after disconnecting external display

Project Member Reported by rpop@chromium.org, Oct 28 2016

Issue description

Chrome Version : 56.0.2901.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit)
OS: Windows 10
Other browsers tested: also repros on 54 stable

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Connect an external display to a laptop and Extend Displays in windows settings
(2) Open a few windows on both displays, and maximize one on the laptop screen
(3) Disconnect the external display

What is the expected result?
All windows are accessible from laptop display

What happens instead?
Some windows cannot be shown. All appear in preview when hovering over Chrome in taskbar, but clicking on the formerly maximized window does nothing.

Might not be limited to maximized windows, this is just the most consistent case I found.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

Interesting. I can't seem to repro this on my Surfacebook 192dpi connected via extend displays to a 96dpi monitor with both maximized and regular windows. My Surfacebook is on 55.0.2883.28.

When I disconnect, both the maximized and regular window reposition to my Surfacebook window.

Windows typically handles window repositioning on screen changes. Who made your video card and what is your display configuration with DPIs?

I used a lenovo X1 carbon with Intel HD graphics 5500. Res 2560x1440 dsf 200%

Connected to an HP Z24i IPS display. Res 1920x1200 dsf 125%

I've also had a few other instances of multi-mon weirdness with this configuration, external to Chrome.
