[Media Router] Notify user when MR component is not installed |
|||||||
Issue descriptionForked from Bug #646171 "wrt ungating cloud services - should we check if kLoadMediaRouterComponentExtension is true if it's a chromium build? Otherwise, if the user is signed in and opens the dialog (with no devices) but is expecting cloud sinks, they may be confused. I don't know actual numbers of chromium usage, but I remember in uni we had chromium preinstalled on our linux desktops and needed special admin permissions to install other software (i.e. Chrome). I would probably have run into the aforementioned case if I didn't know about the kLoadMediaRouterComponentExtension flag. :)" => We should add an Issue in the MR dialog when the component is uninstalled or unavailable. Questions: - What messaging do we want? - Do we want different messaging for Chrome vs. Chromium? - For Chrome users, what is the repair step? Restarting the browser should trigger a request to install. If it's an installer issue, then not sure what would be next.

We've avoided using "Media Router" in any other user facing messaging. I'd prefer to say "Cast support is not installed."

Yeah good point. "Cast services are not installed" works fine, I think.

Messaging SGTM.

Unlikely to get to this any time soon. Moving back to triage.

Estimated that 0.02%-0.06% of users experience this issue, possible workarounds include (1) restarting browser (2) force extensions to update. Could also be a DNS issue which is harder to correct. Moving to Available as its not a high priority.
