i'm trying to install crouton but the shell tab keeps telling me my OS version is old

Your version of Chromium OS is extraordinarily old.
If there are updates pending, please reboot and try again.
Otherwise, you may not be getting automatic updates, in which case you should
post your update_engine.log from chrome://system to  http://crbug.com/296768  and
restore your device using a recovery USB: https://goo.gl/AZ74hj

42 is a little bit old, but unrelated to  http://crbug.com/296768 .
Please go to the help page and check for updates there. If it tells you that your device is up to date after checking for an update; then attach the update_engine.log to this bug (navigate to /var/log/update_engine.log save and upload that file here). You can instead send a feedback report including the system information, which will include the same information.
