Bookmarks and recent tabs gone from new tab page

Application version: 54.0.2840.68
Operating system: 6.0.1

Steps to reproduce:
(1)open new tab
(2)
(3)

Expected result: see bookmarks and recent tabs at bottom of new tab page


Actual result: fail to display those buttons

"Thanks for the feedback! As soon as you start visiting bookmarks again after this update, you will see your most recently visited bookmarks again below the fold on the new tab page. This way, your most important bookmarks will even be accessible directly on the new tab page - and you will be able click through to all other bookmarks as well."
