Text rendering bug with AMDGPU-PRO driver |
|||||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: 54.0.2840.59 (Official Build) (64-bit) Is this the most recent version: Latest Stable OS + version: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS CPU architecture: x86_64 Window manager: GDM 3 (GNOME 3.18.5) URLs: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets (any spreadsheet) Behavior in Linux Firefox: Works as intended Graphics: GPU: AMD Radeon RX480 8Gb Driver: AMDGPU-PRO 16.30 This driver is quite new but totally replaces fglrx (peace with him) in Ubuntu 16.04, so my setup wouldn't be exotic. What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Open any spreadsheet in Google Docs (2) Click any cell What is the expected result? Selection of particular cell (it works with --disable-gpu option) What happens instead? All text (including row/column labels) disappears from edit area. Background colours and text underlines are intact. Attachments: (1) chrome://gpu (2) Rendering trace P.S. I have machine to reproduce.

Still reproducible on AMDGPU-PR0 16.40

The content which is rendering incorrectly is from a Canvas element. Seems like a hardware accelerated Canvas2D issue (or possibly a generic Skia issue). junov@, can you take a look? Thanks!
,
Jan 10 2017
Punting to jvanverth, Looks like a hardware incompatibility with skia's GPU-accelerated text rendering.

Sorry it's taken a while to swing back to this. Before I set up a machine to look at it, can you confirm that it's still happening?
,
Jul 7 2017
It'd also be good to know if it happens in Opera as well (though I'm not sure if they're GPU-accelerated on Linux). Thanks.

Hi, I can confirm the problem is still present. Chromium version: 59.0.3071.109 (Developer Build) Built on Ubuntu, running on LinuxMint 18.2 (64-bit) AMDGPU-PRO version: 17.10-450821 The problem disappears when I disable "Accelerated 2D canvas" in chrome://flags/ (and relaunch) It may be helpful to note that some Google sheet content is rendered correctly even with accelerated canvas - for example if I switch the cell formatting to use white text on black background - see the attached screenshot. The top cell in the default colors is rendered blank, the bottom in inverse colors is OK. chrome://gpu output attached. Thanks!

Same problem here with amdgpu-pro 17.30 version and latest chrome 58.0.3029.110 (Build oficial) (64 bits) I made a video that shows the text is there and it appears while loading the page but dissapears later (video contains several reloads) https://youtu.be/X8J_SeCM7aA

Installing amdgpu-pro-17.40-492261 on either Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS / Ubuntu 17.10 Fresh installs leads to unreadable Google Chrome Version 63.0.3239.84 (Official Build) (64-bit)

mastercatz@ Could you please provide more information, like desktop environment, any issues with other applications, etc.? Thanks! jvanverth@ Feel free to reach me out, I have a home desktop with that hardware and driver, can install a clean distro and provide Remote Desktop / SSH access. Also it's quite powerful to build Chrome on it.

Knowing the graphics card would be useful, in particular whether it's limited to the RX4xx line.
,
Dec 15 2017
Mine is a Radeon RX 460. Problem is gone when using amdgpu (open source driver) instead of amdgpu-pro.
,
Dec 15 2017
I'm experiencing the same problem with Ubuntu 16.04. Also using an MSI RX480 (4gb version).

AMD A10-5800K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics R9 290 anything within google chrome does this the other browsers are ok Chromium Version 63.0.3239.84 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu, running on Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit) runs ok Only other issue is with steam and psychedelic colors http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1231908533 problems are amdgpu-pro-17.40-492261 related if I don't load Kernel driver in use: amdgpu and use Kernel driver in use: radeon everything loads fine
,
Dec 19 2017
Our AMD setup has an R7 360, which is not supported for this driver, and it doesn't look like I can get an RX 4xx locally. I'll order a card and take another stab at this in the New Year.

Dec 20 2017
amdgpu-pro-17.50 and it seems to look ok? I will try a fresh install over Xmas and see if it has been fixed just in case its another setting I have played with that made it work
,
Dec 20 2017
Thanks, that would be great news. It's obviously a driver bug and it's best if we don't have to work around those.
,
Jan 3 2018
mastercatz@ Have you tried a fresh install, and if so, what were the results?
,
Jan 4 2018
sorry been unexpectedly busy, and now work has me doing weekends I have not had to reboot my main machine so have been unable to restest I have a spare SSD ready how ever sorry for the delay
,
Jan 4 2018
actually, I could get this done soon if you can provide any debugging commands you would like me to run please provide them ( ubuntu / google chrome ) I will only be doing the test run once before going to ubuntu 17 I will do ubuntu 16 install. google chrome install, test, reboot test, install old AMD drivers test, reboot test, remove AMD drivers test, reboot test, install new AMD drivers test, reboot, test, apt-update / apt-upgrade , test
,
Jan 5 2018
That sounds thorough enough, thanks. I have an RX 460 arriving soon, so if it continues to duplicate I can take it from there.
,
Jan 6 2018
I dug up an old amdgpu-pro-16.40-348864 as well will try that first unsure if I still have the other driver I was using before will have something for you in a few hrs i have this afternoon free
,
Jan 6 2018
and now I cannot fault it however not entirely a fresh install as amdgpu-pro-16.40-348864 was tried first and failed to boot with an desktop display and was uninstalled ubuntu was installed without any update or 3rd party selected 17.40 was installed, could not fault it, ran apt upgrade, still could not fault it google-chrome-stable (63.0.3239.132-1) unsure what my last version was yet I did over 10 fresh installs last time and chrome was the only thing playing up ... I don't think I have tried any 3rd pary mesa drivers yet
,
Jan 26 2018
In addition to mastercatz@'s testing, I easily duplicated the bug with 17.40, and wasn't able to with 17.50, so it's clearly a driver bug that was fixed.

Hello!
I use a ASUS-ROG-Strix-GL702ZC, with Ryzen 1700 and RX580 laptop. I am using Linux Mint 19. I installed (after changing the installer from only allow ubuntu to linuxmint - /etc/os-release) the AMDGPU PRO and it was not showing the spreadsheets. So, I uninstalled, the open source was using, but, then I found a topic on the Linux Mint, that I have to add my user to the video group. So, I added my user to the video group and now it works fine.
