I have the same problem on 2 different systems. When I start either Chromium or Opera - about 50% of the time the user interface does not appear under xorg. Chromium/Opera keep running until I kill/Ctrl+C. The first system is a DellE6540 running Ubuntu 14 LTS. The second system is a Virtual Box on Macbook host environment with Ubuntu 16 guest - while running Opera. 3d hardware support disabled in Virtualbox. killlall and restart solves the problem. Once it does run - it runs stable. So it seems to be a start up locking issue. Problem has been there for at least a year. Chromium and Opera versions are updated periodically. Opera verion 41 on Ubuntu guest.
