High contrast extension causes significant performance drop in certain websites

Reported by loorong...@gmail.com, Oct 22 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/54.0.2840.71 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Install the extension and activate it
2. Go to productforums.google.com/forum/#!private-forum/chrome+rs-mentor
3. Randomly choose a thread and type a reply (don't actually post it though)
4. Scroll the page

What is the expected behavior?
I should be able to type freely, scrolling should be smooth.

What went wrong?
I cannot type freely. Noticeable janks appear in scrolling.

WebStore page: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/high-contrast/djcfdncoelnlbldjfhinnjlhdjlikmph

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 54.0.2840.71 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 23.0 r0

Originally a user from https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!private-topic/chrome+rs-mentor/QEW3HLc8qOI reported this extension caused Gmail stopped to work. I installed it and went to Gmail, Primary tab initially disappeared but re-appeared after refreshing. When I went back to the product forum to type my reply, I noticed the issue as described above. Other websites like www.google.com (which have input box for me to type and long list of result to scroll) do not have such issue.

I first suspected it might be due to my laptop's computing capability might not be good enough, but I checked with another top contributor with good machine and he confirmed that this happens too. Both of us use Windows 10. Mac OS does not seem to have such issue.

Also occurs on 55.0.2883.21 beta-m (64-bit)

Able to reproduce the issue on Windows-10, Ubuntu 14.04 and Mac OS 10.12 using chrome latest stable M54-54.0.2840.71 by following steps mentioned in the original comment. Observed typing some text in the text area takes time to reflect.

Unable to perform tool bisect due to different issue observed on chrome M53 builds. For example if I try to repro this issue using same above steps on chrome #53.0.2756.0 the forum page completely goes blank and no contents are seen.

Considering the above behavior as bad, I have narrowed down good and bad builds and providing manual CL below as per omahaproxy.

https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+log/53.0.2754.0..53.0.2756.0?pretty=fuller&n=10000

Could anyone look in to this and help us in assigning to the concerned owner for further triaging.

Thanks!

+Laura, can you help us find an owner for this?

Removing Extensions label for now so that the accessibility team can have a look to see if this is just the extension doing something inefficient; feel free to relabel if this seems to be a bug in the extensions platform itself.

I have the exactly same problem.

After I enable "high contrast", my gmail is frozen. Other website with input box also become frozen.

After I disable "high contrast", gmail and other websites become normal immediately.

I am using Dell Latitude E7440, and Windows 7 operating systems.

Comment 7 by george...@gmail.com, Oct 29 2016

I used gmail and high contrast daily. It worked fine until yesterday, 10/27/2016.

I first found that gmail became frozen. I re-installed Chrome. Gmail works fine again. After I enable "high contrast", then gmail becomes frozen. After I disable "high contrast", gmail works again. So, the root reason is "high contrast".

Hope Google can fix it soon. Thanks.

Issue 661190 has been merged into this issue.
Same issue here. Ironically, it's primarily a problem with google web pages (docs, specifically for me.) Google assures me they are working on it :)

Routing to blink team for triaging, from the console error it seems to be bilnk-css issue.

Can someone bisect and check whether the errors in #10 are also present in versions of Chrome where this works as intended?
As per comment #11, Checked the errors in Windows-Chrome good build version-50.0.2640.0 & observed different errors unlike errors shown in comment#10.

Here i am attaching the good build & bad build error screenshots for your reference.

Ligimole@ Please let us know if anything needs to be done from our end.

Thank you.

Given when users started to report this issue, I think there's a good chance this is the same issue as 661190.

Can you try the original repro to see if there's a difference between these versions?

Good Build : 54.0.2840.26 (Revision : 411209)
Bad Build : 54.0.2840.27 (Revision : 411497)

From the above CL , suspecting the change and assigning the owner

@senorblanco - Could you please check whether this is caused with respect to your change, if not please help us in assigning it to the right owner.

Bisecting bug 662969 led me to the same patch (r415043), and also r395263, also by @senorblanco

Bug 661190 seems related too

I've pushed a new version of the High Contrast extension with a workaround to the web store.

Can anyone confirm this fixes the issue for them? I tested it manually and the workaround seems to solve the problem. Visit your extensions page and manually refresh. The updated version of High Contrast is 0.9.3.

If verified, we can remove the releaseblock but keep the bug assigned to @senorblanco because the underlying issue with CSS filters may affect other sites too.

Just installed the updated extension, and it seems to have fixed the problem for me. Thanks.

Verified this issue on chrome latest M55-55.0.2883.44 by following steps mentioned in the original comment. Observed no performance lag while typing when high contrast extension is enabled in chrome. Hence adding TE-Verified label.

The Blink>CSS component has a policy of one component per bug. It's not clear that this bug belongs under Blink>CSS. I'll remain cc'd in case you need the attention of the Style team.

Hey Victor - can you help triage? I don't know Chrome well enough to tell if this is Skia, renderer or something completely different.

This issue sounds fixed based on comments #17 and #19.

dmazzoni@, what workaround was required to fix this and how can we reproduce the original issue?

Assigning to senorblanco@ to weigh in on the underlying CSS filter performance issue.
