Description: Allow a ethernet configuration profile to be saved when configured manually for 802.1x/EAP-TLS authentication similar to how WiFI network profiles are saved/displayed.
When you connect a Chromebook to a Ethernet port that requires security/authentication, there is nothing to help the user understand that network requires authentication.
Use case: It should be easier to connect Chromebooks to secure networks. Many customers in secure networks have other devices that are already working and connect to secure wired networks and find it challenging to get Chromebooks to work the same way.
See background on wired 802.1x security
https://www.sans.org/reading-room/whitepapers/networkdevs/wired-8021x-security-1654
Motivation:
On Mac OS X, a pop up notification clearly indicates to the user that the device is connected to a network that requires authentication, and allows the user to select pre-configured profiles or manually configure one. See screen shot.
ChromeOS devices should make it easier for users and administrators to get Chromebooks connected on secure networks.
1) If there is a policy for 802.1x Ethernet and it works, the user can't even tell by clicking on the Ethernet adapter to see the details.
2) If a user can manually configure 802.1x Ethernet, that profile is not saved in away that user can see what was configured.
