Middle clicking on a link causes popup warning

Issue description

Chrome Version       : 54.0.2840.59 (64-bit)
OS Version: Goobuntu 
URLs (if applicable) : http://fivethirtyeight.com/
Other browsers tested:

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Middle click on image link

What is the expected result?

Links opens in new tab.

What happens instead of that?

Popup warning displayed. If I click again it opens. If I reload the page it works fine. Just first time in a day causes problem. Reproducible in incognito mode.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

Unable to reproduce this issue, we tested this issue on Windows 10,Mac 10.12 and Ubuntu 14.04 machine with chrome version stable 54.0.2840.59

Observed that on clicking on images it is redirected to newpage

Could you please try this scenario with clean profile without using any apps or extensions in your browser and let us know your observation.

I tried using the 'Guest mode' and it still happens. This time testes on Mac and using Command click, as I do not have mouse attached, but the effect is the same:

I've reproduced the blocked popup with one of the images: it just tried to open the link I've middleclicked (apparently, using "window.open()"), hence I think the site tracks link clicks for analytics but doesn't account for the spec changes in the recent Chrome: non-primary buttons are no longer reported in the "click" DOM event.
