Chrome browser freezing on Mac OS X (El Capitan)

Project Member Reported by yye...@google.com, Oct 14 2016

Issue description

Version: 53.0.2785.143 (Official Build) (64-bit)
OS: Mac OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6

This is the second day in a row Chrome (53.0.2785.143) on my Mac (OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6) completely froze; utilizing virtually all of the memory on the machine.

The first freeze (yesterday) was during a hangouts vc.
The second freeze (today) happened while I had roughly 10 tabs open, which luckily I was able to capture a heap dump during the freeze.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B6fESMmJITTNZVhDVlRDZFZmM2M?usp=sharing

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) --unsure which tab is triggering the freeze/high memory util.--

What is the expected output?
no freeze

What do you see instead?
freeze

In your screenshots, we see that your machine is using ~3GB of swap, and depending on whether you have an SSD, I can see that easily bringing your machine to a crawl. But you've used the word "freeze". Could you elaborate?

In your task maanger screenshot, your machine is using ~19GB of memory, but the screenshot [which I think is showing the highest memory consuming apps] is only using ~5GB. Not really sure what's happening there. Could you provide more details?

As I see it, there are multiple possible issues but I can't differentiate them.
1) Chrome has a runaway memory leak.
2) Chrome uses too much memory in general, eating into your machine's swap.
3) Something really weird is happening to your kernel, causing it to somehow leak memory.
