Issue descriptionChrome Version : latest Canary build URLs (if applicable) : Other browsers tested: Google Chrome Version 53.0.2785.143 m (64-bit) OK What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) latest Canary build launches, displays a raw blue title bar, then crashes. This is systematic. On Windows 10 Anniversary with all updates. This is not happening in "standard" Google Chrome with similar configuration.

Same for me after latest update. Win 10 x64
,
Oct 8 2016
Windows 10 does not notice anything untoward. No crash report whatsoever. Canary looks like a ghost window just passing through.
,
Oct 8 2016
Same issue for me. Win7-64. Just crashes out on open.
,
Oct 8 2016
I think this is because Canary's installer doesn't download anything!
,
Oct 8 2016
I uninstalled Canary completely and tried a clean install - it did download 56.0.2884.1_chrome_installer.exe (44 MB). Install ran .. started, flashed ghost window and disappeared.

Canary 2884 crashes on me as well on only ONE of two PC's running same version of Windows (14942) and Canary (2884). One difference between the two is working one is AMD Radeon and non-working is Nvidia graphics.
,
Oct 8 2016
Same ghost window here with Intel HD Graphics 2500 (Integrated Graphics Controller). Win 10 Anniversary 64bit.
,
Oct 9 2016
I got the same on Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview: Build 14942.rs_prelease.161003-1929
,
Oct 9 2016
Looking at “C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp\chrome_installer.log” after Canary had flashed a ghost window, I found these entries: [1009/103147:ERROR:install_worker.cc(211)] Failed creating a firewall rules. Continuing with install. [1009/103302:ERROR:install_worker.cc(211)] Failed creating a firewall rules. Continuing with install.

Same issue here, debug.log in installation dir shows fully unreadable errors. I wish the chrome dev's would add some rollback function into the update process where the old working dir is backed up or something to the likes.
,
Oct 9 2016
Yep. Life is boring without Canary. I wish they have a site with all versions of standalone installs.

Same here on Win 10 Pro 64-bit (Anniversary Version 1607). Only in Canary since latest update, not standard Chrome. It only creates a chrome.exe process, never see it launch. debug.log: [1009/133750:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0xdaf0271a00000000, size 0x23a fully unreadable [1009/133750:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0xdaf0273a00000000, size 0x23a fully unreadable [1009/133750:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0x0, size 0x23a fully unreadable [1009/133750:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2451897449414 out of range [1009/133750:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2451897451336 out of range [1009/133750:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2451897451676 out of range [1009/133750:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2451897447902 out of range

Reported that Canary 56.0.2884.0 crashed for me on October 8. All previous versions have started with occasional issues here and there but at least it STARTED. Prior to and alongside with I run Basic Chrome currently at Version 53.0.2785.143 m This is the contents of my debug.log. They don't change as this is my fourth attempted download and reinstall of Canary: [1009/011643:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0xc10a28a400000000, size 0x190 fully unreadable [1009/011643:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0xc10a28c400000000, size 0x190 fully unreadable [1009/011643:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0x0, size 0x190 fully unreadable [1009/011644:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 1721314974116 out of range [1009/011644:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 1721314972756 out of range [1009/011644:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 1721314975744 out of range [1009/011644:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 1721314971694 out of range [1009/011709:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0x4f55289600000000, size 0x27b fully unreadable [1009/011709:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0x4f5528b600000000, size 0x27b fully unreadable [1009/011709:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0x0, size 0x27b fully unreadable [1009/011709:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2728778735280 out of range [1009/011709:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2728778733920 out of range [1009/011709:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2728778736908 out of range [1009/011709:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2728778732862 out of range Attached is my Windows 10 Tenth Anniversary profile.

Yesterday when I was trying various things I removed Canary and somehow managed to get the 32 bit version of Canary installed - Version 56.0.2884.1 canary SyzyASan. It works (also some other issues I was having are no longer there). This AM it had a "Relaunch indicator" - it upgraded to Version 56.0.2885.1 canary SyzyASan and worked. Assuming that perhaps the bug was fixed I tried to get back to 64 bit - from that point on nothing I tried (including uninstall / uninstall and removal of C:\Users\XXXXXXXX\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome SxS ) would get it going again. Back to the ghost window and then disappearing. Tried both the 32 & 64 bit installers. I finally have 32 Bit Canary working once again - by restoring C:\Users\XXXXXXXX\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome SxS from automatic backup taken at midnight. Additional weirdness - I concurrently run two (2) other Versions of Chrome: - Version 54.0.2840.50 beta-m (64-bit) - This is my default browser - Version 56.0.2886.0 (64-bit) and every time an uninstall of Canary it crashes ALL currently running versions of Chrome. BTW - Version 56.0.2886.0 (64-bit) is working OK for me. This is all on Win 7 Pro 64 bit SP1 + up to date fixes.

Canary crashing here too

comfirmed
,
Oct 9 2016
Latest Canary update fixed this problem. It installed as “Version 56.0.2885.1 canary SyzyASan”.
,
Oct 9 2016
"Version 56.0.2885.1 canary SyzyASan" probably a 32 bit version. Check in Windows task manager to verify. Any idea if the 64 bit version is fixed ?
,
Oct 9 2016
You are right. It was the 32 bit version. The 64 bit version is still crashing on launch.
,
Oct 10 2016
I do not think the 32 bit build of Canary has had this issue at all - I have not had these crashes with either 2884.1 or 2885.1 (32 Bit). The "Waterfall" Version 56.0.2886.0 (64-bit) of Chrominum has not given me any problems (but it also does NOT use the same install process. Perhaps tomorrow the .2886. build level will hit Canary and the problem will be resolved.

32 bit on Windows 8. Still crashing.
,
Oct 10 2016
56.0.2885.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit) is working fine for me on Windows 10 1607 (14393.222). Could someone impacted who has see crashes visit chrome://crashes and send in a crashid that looks like it might correspond to one of the failed launches? Thanks.
,
Oct 10 2016
How do you go to “chrome://crashes” in a Canary version that won’t launch except for a fleeting empty ghost window?
,
Oct 10 2016
Note that latest Canary is not exactly “crashing”. It launches very briefly, flashes an empty ghost window with only an empty title bar, then vanishes without leaving any trace in the Windows system apart from its own home folder. Windows does not notice anything untoward.
,
Oct 10 2016
Indeed, white screen and closing.
,
Oct 10 2016
The Window never flashes for me. Only the taskbar and tray icon, leaving behind a chrome.exe process to manually close.
,
Oct 10 2016
Same problem with brief flash of a window but not displayed long enough to read/see. Windows 7 64bit.
,
Oct 10 2016
It's at least downloading the install for me now. Earlier it wasn't even. But still facing the issue on Windows 8 32-bit.
,
Oct 10 2016
8.1 32bit
,
Oct 10 2016
Hmm. 56.0.2886.0 32-bit is working fine for me on Windows 8.1. OP: you said in comment 27 that you were able to launch. Can you see anything in chrome://crashes? Anyone else: do you see any useful messages in the Application event log?
,
Oct 10 2016
Can you also confirm you are not running Chrome in any compatibility mode, thanks.
,
Oct 10 2016
For me, the crash issue is in the 64 bit version. Apologies for not remembering to mention it in my original reply.

I have tried registering the Canary setup file with the Windows firewall. To no avail. I systematically get this kind of line in “chrome_installer.log”: [1010/170705:ERROR:install_worker.cc(211)] Failed creating a firewall rules. Continuing with install. “debug.log” invariably includes these kind of lines: [1010/170707:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0x6a2a211600000000, size 0x22a fully unreadable [1010/170707:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0x6a2a213600000000, size 0x22a fully unreadable [1010/170707:ERROR:process_info.cc(608)] range at 0x0, size 0x22a fully unreadable [1010/170707:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2381295932824 out of range [1010/170707:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2381295933350 out of range [1010/170707:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2381295933690 out of range [1010/170707:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2381295931994 out of range [1010/170707:WARNING:in_range_cast.h(38)] value 2381193925824 out of range Latest “installed” build is version 56.0.2886.0 If I launch the Canary setup with the following command-line: "C:\Users\XXXXXX\Downloads\ChromeSetup.exe" --enable-logging --v=1 I get a Google “install error” message with code 0x80040c01

Yes, the crash is because of "vmovdqu" in chrome.dll. I'm running Phenom II and I believe it doesn't have AVX, wtf?

I don't see how those stacks could have resulted in an illegal instruction. Perhaps this is a PGO thing, or perhaps this is something to do with VS2015 and older processors. Can those on the bug run "msinfo32" and look for their Processor type (e.g. "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2690 v3")

So maybe it is something to do with official optimizations and/or PGO. I'll assign to seb to give this bug an owner but I'm not sure we'll be able to make much progress without a local repro.

re #66, AFAIK nobody touched the shim in the last months. Would be very surprised if anything showed up now.
