I have the same (or similar) issue since relaunch for latest Canary this AM. Version 54.0.2840.50 beta-m (64-bit) runs no problem. But Canary will not launch - briefly displays a window and then disappears. In my case WIN 7 Pro 64 Bit. 

I tried to uninstall and run a full install - same results.

Windows 10 does not notice anything untoward. No crash report whatsoever. Canary looks like a ghost window just passing through.

Same issue for me.  Win7-64.  Just crashes out on open.  

I think this is because Canary's installer doesn't download anything! 

I uninstalled Canary completely and tried a clean install - it did download 56.0.2884.1_chrome_installer.exe (44 MB). Install ran .. started, flashed ghost window and disappeared. 

Canary 2884 crashes on me as well on only ONE of two PC's running same version of Windows (14942) and Canary (2884). One difference between the two is working one is AMD Radeon and non-working is Nvidia graphics.

Same issue here, debug.log in installation dir shows fully unreadable errors. I wish the chrome dev's would add some rollback function into the update process where the old working dir is backed up or something to the likes.

Only in Canary since latest update, not standard Chrome.

Yesterday when I was trying various things I removed Canary and somehow managed to get the 32 bit version of Canary installed - Version 56.0.2884.1 canary SyzyASan. It works (also some other issues I was having are no longer there). This AM it had a "Relaunch indicator" - it upgraded to Version 56.0.2885.1 canary SyzyASan and worked. Assuming that perhaps the bug was fixed I tried to get back to 64 bit - from that point on nothing I tried (including uninstall / uninstall and removal of C:\Users\XXXXXXXX\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome SxS ) would get it going again. Back to the ghost window and then disappearing. Tried both the 32 & 64 bit installers.

I finally have 32 Bit Canary working once again - by restoring C:\Users\XXXXXXXX\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome SxS from automatic backup taken at midnight. 

Additional weirdness - I concurrently run two (2) other Versions of Chrome:
- Version 54.0.2840.50 beta-m (64-bit) - This is my default browser
- Version 56.0.2886.0 (64-bit)
and every time an uninstall of Canary it crashes ALL currently running versions of Chrome.

BTW - Version 56.0.2886.0 (64-bit) is working OK for me.

This is all on Win 7 Pro 64 bit SP1 + up to date fixes.

Latest Canary update fixed this problem. It installed as “Version 56.0.2885.1 canary SyzyASan”.

"Version 56.0.2885.1 canary SyzyASan" probably a 32 bit version. Check in Windows task manager to verify.

You are right. It was the 32 bit version. The 64 bit version is still crashing on launch.

I do not think the 32 bit build of Canary has had this issue at all - I have not had these crashes with either 2884.1 or 2885.1 (32 Bit).

The "Waterfall" Version 56.0.2886.0 (64-bit) of Chrominum has not given me any problems (but it also does NOT use the same install process. Perhaps tomorrow the .2886. build level will hit Canary and the problem will be resolved.

56.0.2885.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit) is working fine for me on Windows 10 1607 (14393.222). Could someone impacted who has see crashes visit chrome://crashes and send in a crashid that looks like it might correspond to one of the failed launches? Thanks.

How do you go to “chrome://crashes” in a Canary version that won’t launch except for a fleeting empty ghost window?

Note that latest Canary is not exactly “crashing”. It launches very briefly, flashes an empty ghost window with only an empty title bar, then vanishes without leaving any trace in the Windows system apart from its own home folder. Windows does not notice anything untoward.

Only the taskbar and tray icon, leaving behind a chrome.exe process to manually close.

Same problem with brief flash of a window but not displayed long enough to read/see. Windows 7 64bit.

It's at least downloading the install for me now. Earlier it wasn't even. But still facing the issue on Windows 8 32-bit.

OP: you said in comment 27 that you were able to launch. Can you see anything in chrome://crashes?

For me, the crash issue is in the 64 bit version. Apologies for not remembering to mention it in my original reply.

Cannot start Version 56.0.2886.1 on Win7, 64bit. The window with "New tab" title quickly flashes and is closed. Tried reinstall, cleared "User Data" directory, same problem.

I get a Google “install error” message with code 0x80040c01

I don't see how those stacks could have resulted in an illegal instruction. Perhaps this is a PGO thing, or perhaps this is something to do with VS2015 and older processors.

thanks all.. .my problem is settled. no more crash. of canary chrome.

Doing the same as october, Icon loads on canary then it flashes & disappears

Chrome Beta Ok. Uninstalled canary. Downloaded canary & installed -  did nothing.

Indeed, same symptoms.

This might be issue 679147, which is affecting 57.0.2975.0 and 57.0.2976.0. Crossing fingers that the next canary fixes it.
