Earcon no longer working in dev channel on Chrome OS

Reported by st...@sawczyn.com, Oct 7 2016

Issue description

I just upgraded to the dev channel and noticed that an earcon that normally plays in GMail no longer seems to be working. Specifically, the earcon that plays when a message is selected or de-selected is now silent. This works in beta, but breaks in Dev using ChromeVox Next in both instances.

Mode: force_next

I messed up the description field, it should have said dev channel, not beta. The longer description of the problem is accurate. Apparently I can't edit the issue now that it's posted.

Summary: Earcon no longer working in dev channel on Chrome OS (was: Earcon no longer working in beta channel on Chrome OS)
What are you doing exactly? Pressing x while over the threadlist?

Comment 3 by st...@sawczyn.com, Oct 13 2016

Exactly. Pressing x 'x' is the Gmail keyboard shortcut to select a thread
and formerly, an "earcon" would confirm this selection in ChromeVox.

Not expected. See ChromeVox Classic. The issue is the checkbox is actually part of the table cell contents. Reading the entire row is not a viable option since the row itself contains an aria label. Note that the label also conveys "selected" which is different than "checked"; Gmail exposes that text and ChromeVox has nothing to do with this. Feel free to provide an html snippet if you'd like to follow up on this behavior.

Comment 6 by dtseng@chromium.org, Oct 25 2016

In addition, the previous behavior of actually reading all descendants caused other regressions, so though you liked that behavior, it's not correct (in respecting the aria label overriding contents of the row).

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about the discendants as much as the audio "earcon" that indicates that a checkbox is checked or not. I understand that the ARIA label shouldn't override the content, but does that apply to the earcon which conveys the state of the checkbox specifically?
