"Checking for updates" downloading problem

Reported by ctforde1...@yahoo.com, Oct 5 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/53.0.2785.143 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Go to "about"
2. "Checking for updates"

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
This has never happened to me before while using Chrome, it started at the beginning of this month. Whenever I try to download something while Chrome is checking for updates (which for some reason never ends) it doesn't download.

Let's say I wanted to download a picture using "save image as" the prompt that would usually come up to ask you where would you like to save it won't show up. I've tried reinstalling Chrome, restarting my computer, and many other methods with no success. After about 6 or more minutes Chrome sometimes finishes "checking for updates" and everything goes back to normal...for about 10 seconds. Then it will start checking again and the problem comes back. I honestly have no idea what's going on.

Another thing I tried to do right now is attach a picture to this issue and it would not let me do that either.

Did this work before? N/A

Could you please try a system restart and try again . As of now, 53.0.2785.143 is the latest stable in Chrome. Please do let us know with your observations.

Thank You !
I restarted my system, nothing has changed as of now. Do you have any other suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

Please check whether you find any error in chrome://chrome. If yes, please provide the error details . If not, you already have the latest update of chrome stable.

Thank You !
Found out the problem. Something happened to my profile so I had to create a new one. Problem is now fixed.
