iOS: Transparent favicons are rendered with a white background

OS: Android 7.0

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Open https://garron.net on a tablet (either Android or iPad)

What is the expected output?
The favicon appears on the tab with a transparent border around a heart-shaped-icon

What do you see instead?
The favicon appears with a white background.

Also note that Android gets this right (except in a case that I can't reproduce reliably).
