Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/53.0.2785.116 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce the problem: Currently, if I want to open a Device Mode, I need to open DevTools first. Depending on the docking mode, it might either make my viewport area smaller, open a new window on top of the page etc. All those are small annoyances if I just want to play with the responsive design quickly. In Firefox, Ctrl+Shift+M takes me to their version of Device Mode directly. In Chrome/ium, it's unpleasant that this shortcut is already taken for switching users so it will not be that straightforward change but it would still be super-useful. What is the expected behavior? What went wrong? UX Did this work before? N/A Chrome version: 53.0.2785.116 Channel: stable OS Version: 10.0 Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 23.0 r0

I don't think we are going to have Device Mode without DevTools open. Do you propose to add a shortcut to open DevTools and engage with Device Mode at the same time? It's possible with two shortcuts right now (Ctrl+Shift+I -> Ctrl+Shift+M). You can also quickly switch docking with Ctrl+Shift+D.

The proposal is to open Device Mode without DevTools. From the user perspective, they are two separate tools. When trying responsive layouts, I don't need DevTools occupying my screen real estate, quite to the contrary.

Ok, over to Seth for prioritization.

Keyboard shortcuts are very difficult to add given the complexity of navigating around existing Chrome shortcuts. We also view Device Mode as a key part of the full DevTools experience so I don't think we are likely to invest time in decoupling the mode into two tools. I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of a related feature request which would provide greater control of the Device Mode panel from the DevTools API. If that feature were implemented, you could write a custom extension to better achieve your desired workflow. |
