*DYSLEXIA AND COLORED OVERLAYS
According to Evans et al. (1999) colored filters determines benefit in about 80% of individuals using them. The adoption of colored overlays/filters in schools is incremented given that the visual stress syndrome – which symptoms they are supposed to alleviate – is often observed in dyslexic students (Irlen, 1991; Singleton and Trotter, 2005; Singleton and Henderson, 2007), and it is in schools that students are usually diagnosed as dyslexics. The estimation of visual stress is, in fact, often included in tests aimed at assessing reading skills and dyslexia (Nichols et al., 2009), and the colored overlays are often used as a remedy for the visual stress symptoms co-occurring with dyslexia.

_______

Many people need to be able to customize text in order to read effectively. Aspects of text formatting that users need to customize include: text size, text color and background color, font face, leading/line spacing, linearization/reflow, kerning, letter spacing, word spacing, line length, text style, justification, and more, including changes to all text and changes at the element level (e.g., headings different from body text).
However, there are few resources that provide clear guidance on text customization. Additionally, most of this customization has not been well integrated in mainstream user agents (web browsers, etc.), nor is it sufficiently included in some accessibility standards and support material (such as the Section 508 standards).

_____

Dyslexia is an inherited condition that makes reading, writing, and spelling difficult. It has absolutely no connection with intelligence.

Reading disabilities, such as dyslexia, are the most common type of learning disability. In fact, an estimated 15-20% of the population has some sort of language-based learning disability. Among these, dyslexia is the most common. Evidence suggests that dyslexia is an inherited condition found among both males and females of all ethnic backgrounds.

While contrast can be provided by black text on a white background this is not so beneficial when considering Dyslexia.

Research suggests that colored backgrounds, increased line-spacing, font color and style, and paragraph justification all have an effect.

Not sure if this should be rolled into existing feature requests or not.
20% of school-aged children in the US are dyslexic.
Given the proliferation of technology within the educational realm, this is a real live daily concern, that can be remedied with your assistance.

Please roll it in... There is an immediate need...

Thank You :-)
There are a lot of existing Chrome extensions that change the text and background colors:

#4: Those extensions can't change chrome:// pages like Settings
I have exhausted my efforts to find one that does both, or a suitable combo
of two that work together... Bringing this issue to you is my last
resort...

OK, we appreciate the feedback.

The problem with just swapping the foreground and background colors is that it works for some sites but just breaks others. That's why we've resisted making something like that built-in, though of course extensions are free to do that.

We've already been looking into a built-in high contrast feature that could address some of these use cases.

Can you tell us what settings you would use if you had this feature? That will help. For example would you set it to black on white? Or white on black?

Would it work if you could increase the contrast of the screen while preserving colors?

What if all text had a "shadow" around it in a highly contrasting color so that it was always easy to read text no matter what the background?

Please understand that each Dyslexic individual will have a unique
combination of colors for the background as well as the text color.

The particular child i am working with has (through clinical testing) found
that a particular dark-ish green background, in combination with a medium
brownish-gold text color.

I do not know the exact colors, but the important point is that both text
color and background are greatly different for each individual.

ie. My own daughter used 2 pink overlays on her printed text, and had no
real options for setting her laptop... (shes 25 now) :-)

That's very helpful to know! I'll message you offline to get more information.

This is probably going to be covered by the new High Contrast mode.
