[gFeedback] : Users unable to use Japanese, Korean and Chinese IME in M53

Project Member Reported by jainabhi...@chromium.org, Sep 26 2016

Issue description

Japanese Windows users cannot input Japanese letters using Microsoft IME in M53+ version of Chrome.
Users however report that they can use Japanese IME on other browsers

Users tried disabling flash addon or disabled flag --no-sandbox but it did not work.
Japanese IME worked if users add Google Japanese input extension found on
https://tools.google.com/dlpage/japaneseinput/eula.html?platform=win

In case more information is required, we can connect with users on JA forum
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome-ja/YTCaNdtQzl8
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/0QEkmXq7628

Please find some other information attached in screenshots.

We see reports from other languages (Chinese and Korean) as well, please let me know if we need new bugs for them

Environments where issue is reported to reproduce so far:
windows7 home premium sp1 64bit
chrome: 53.0.2785.116 m
Microsoft Office IME 2010

Google Chrome 53.0.2785.116 m 32bit
Microsoft office IME 2010(14.0.7162.5000) SP2
Windows 7 32bit

Windows 7、
Chrome 53.0.2785.116 (64-bit)、
Microsoft IME 12.0.6670.5000 (Office 2007)

A user is reporting that turning Adobe Flash player off allows them to use Microsoft IME (turning it back on breaks the experience again) in https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/0QEkmXq7628

Users on both forums (JP and EN) also report that the issue also reproduces when using Acrobat Reader (e.h typing file name in Japanese)

I don't see anything confidential here. Removing the view-restriction.

songsuk@: can you check this out?
If reproduced, this should be a stable blocker (hmm... 53 is already stable). A fix (once found) should be merged back to M53.

Adding back R-V-G for the stat in comment 0. SOrry about that.

Comment 5 by js...@chromium.org, Sep 27 2016

oh... it's already reproduced by nataliyaf@.

Able to enter CJK with Microsoft IME on Chrome 53.0.2785.116(64bit)/Win7 Enterprise Service Pack1.

Since Browser QA team doesn't have MS office, unable to check the issue with MS Office CJK IME.
Please let me know, I can delete the screenshot in description if we want to invite user feedback on this bug by making it public.
most users report specifically MS Office IME (as opposed to Microsoft IME)

Thank you, songsuk@.

I read the above forum thread, but it's not clear what exactly they did when they said 'turning Adobe Flash player off'.

And, we also need to know whether Japanese (and possibly Korean and Chinese) IME is broken only in web pages or in places like omnibox.

re comment 7: jainabhishek@, can you delete the screenshot in comment 0? (it does not seem confidential. It's conops user report statistics, isn't it? Anyway, to be safe, it's better to delete it before opening up the bug to the public).

@jshin, reached out to users on the JP forum to confirm both of these points, will update here when info in available
Happens in Omnibox as well as Gmail etc.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome-ja/YTCaNdtQzl8

re Disabling Flash: user has done it via Chrome menu Settings --> Advanced settings --> Privacy --> Content settings --> Plugins --> Manage individual plugins
(restart Chrome)

It appears to only have been a temporary fix, as today they report IME not working again.

chongz@: can you take a look? Thanks
Re #15: As this issue also happens on Omnibox and Acrobat Reader, I would assume it to be a Windows or Aura issue? (non-Blink issue)

Is user able to repro this bug on M53 latest Stable version 53.0.2785.143? Is this bug exist on M54?

Per comment #6, songsuk@ is unable to repro the bug on Stable version 53.0.2785.116 (Not tested on MS office).

Also We haven't found root cause and fix is not available yet, so it is unlikely it will make to M53 (M53 is already in stable and there is no plan for M53 respin). It would be great to fix this for M54 if this issue exists on M54 (M54 will go to stable in couple of weeks).

Able to enter CJK on Omnibox, PDF file, Flash input with Microsoft IME on 53.0.2785.143(64bit)/Win7.
Users on JA forum reporting that issue is resolved when IBM Rapport extension (http://www-03.ibm.com/software/products/en/category/advanced-fraud-protection) is uninstalled.
Extension is recommended by banks in Japan for transactions online, so users may not be willing to uninstall it.
