These steps were done on a Cyan test image (R55-8801.0).
1) Download and flash a recent Cyan image.
2) Makes sure you have the standard USB3.0 Ethernet adapter (this is available at techstop):
https://mystuff.corp.google.com/stuff/items/703
http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=11195
3) Use this Ethernet adapter to ssh into your cyan machine.
4) print lsusb
localhost ~ # lsusb
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0bda:8153 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0a2a Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 04f2:b490 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
5) Reboot your machine. You shouldn't be able to connect to your machine after a reboot unless you take the adapter out and plug it back in again.
I've also seen this issue with USB3.0 memory sticks. I don't see this issue with veyron_minnie.
