Regression: [MD Settings] Search result in background vanish after clicking on 'Main menu' icon.

Issue description

Chrome Version: 55.0.2865.0 Revision 9ea2a739531edffad0859fdfd0a53f1f039026e4-refs/heads/master@{#419399}
OS: Windows(7,8,10). Mac(10.10.5,10.11.4) 

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Launch chrome, navigate to chrome://md-settings
(2) Type 'Reset' in search field(search result will appear), then click on 'Main menu' icon.
(3) Observe the search result in background.

Actual: Search result in background is vanish after clicking on 'Main menu' icon.

Expected: Search result in background should not vanish after clicking on 'Main menu' icon.

This is a regression issue, broken in 'M-54', will soon update the other info:

Using the per-revision bisect providing the bisect results,
Good build: 54.0.2830.0 (Revision: 412124).
Bad build: 54.0.2831.0 (Revision: 412405).

You are probably looking for a change made after 412292 (known good), but no later than 412293 (first known bad).

This is fixed in the latest canary(55.0.2873.0) as tested on Windows 10.

Reverse bisected to identify the CL that fixed this.

This was fixed by https://codereview.chromium.org/2350313003 hence merging into  Issue 640120
