I think this is not the right solution. 
I was trying to remember why we did in the first place.
In talking to Caroline, we remembered this is done so that we don't have to build images for all boards in our nightly testing. 

So, I think this last version will break some of the tests we are running nightly. In particular the graphics tests.

The real solution was discussed a while back.

basically, download the autotest tar files that come with the image.

I think we are better of reverting this last change. It will break graphics_GLMark2 but nightly testing will not be affected. 

if you agree lets reopen the bug and revert. We will need to find time to fix this.
