hotrod: logitech webcam does not work on panther |
||||||||
Issue descriptionWe have a direct report from a customer that their webcam is not working on their Chromebox. He's tried it on his friend Leo's chromebook and it works there. It's a Logitech C920, which we recommend. The chromebox is a CN60. I have asked for feedback reports, they will come tonight and I will update this report. From the customer: Leo's Chromebook: Version 52.0.2743.116 Platform 53.50.68 (Official Build) stable-channel candy Firmware Google_Candy.5216310.57 My Chromebox had this until today before upgrading: Version 52.0.2743.116 Platform 8350.68.0 (did not write down the rest) Firmware Google_Panther.4920.24.26 My Chromebox after upgrading: Version 53.0.2785.103 Platform 8530.81.0 (Official Build) stable-channel panther Firmware Google_Panther.4920.24.26 My Chromebox doesn't recognize the Logitech USB webcam in either the mic or camera settings area. The OS does not recognize it and shows no camera/mic is connected. The web folks said this camera works but not with mine. Do you know of any settings hidden or ???? that might cause it? My Chromebox model is CN60 which is Chromebox for Meetings version.

OK here's the deal... this is all the information we'll get from the panther. But if the user was kind enough to plug the device into Leo's chromebook and send feedback from there, we would know if Logitech has changed the hardware. I'll check if it's too much trouble. Pawel you're off the hook :) Steven, this worries me a bit because it's that webcam should work. But it could be a one-off.

Thanks Luigi. I've not seen a C920 that didn't work with Panther (CN60). Maybe the USB port is defective on this particular Chromebox? We aren't receiving reports of CfM problems with C920s, as far as I've heard. Assigning to Harpreet to confirm that C920 on Panther works correctly in our continuous CfM tests.

I just checked with our CN60 (8530.81.0) and C920 shows up and works as expected. From the attached feedback logs it looks like the camera is not being detected at all. As Steven said, might be a defective USB port. I mean, has the partner tried plugging in the camera into a different USB port on CN60?
,

We asked earlier: Per the reporter: "I've tried the camera in the three free ports. There's a USB keyboard and mouse plugged into the fourth port which i didn't try for the camera. In the past I had a wireless mouse plugged into the front ports."

The customer tried the webcam on a different chromebook and sent feedback. We see this: 2016-09-12T16:09:37.069838-07:00 INFO kernel: [ 88.772381] usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 6 using xhci_hcd 2016-09-12T16:09:38.185851-07:00 INFO kernel: [ 89.889501] usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=082d 2016-09-12T16:09:38.185903-07:00 INFO kernel: [ 89.889536] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 2016-09-12T16:09:38.185919-07:00 INFO kernel: [ 89.889561] usb 1-1: Product: HD Pro Webcam C920 2016-09-12T16:09:38.185929-07:00 INFO kernel: [ 89.889581] usb 1-1: SerialNumber: D579D7EF 2016-09-12T16:09:38.192738-07:00 INFO kernel: [ 89.896153] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device HD Pro Webcam C920 (046d:082d) I searched for 082d and found other hotrod bugs, but in all of them the kernel had no trouble enumerating the USB device.

Vincent, could you take a look at the suspicious USB messages in c#2?
,

No other feedback reports for this problem (searched for "chromebox" and "logitech webcam" or "c920"). I am not sure we can do much. Something fails during device enumeration. The number and frequency of retries might give us a clue of where it fails, but then?

I could probably arrange for the device(s) to be brought on site... it is a friend of mine that lives in SF...

> could you take a look at the suspicious USB messages in c#2? "hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 5" > the kernel did not even manage to exchange a single USB data packet between the internal hub and the camera device. The only working USB devices in the logs (or mentioned in the customer report) are full-speed and low-speed, so we might just have a big SI issue on the motherboard or the ports assembly. Given the camera works on the other device (and for what is worth we have dozens of those Logitech cam on all kind of Panthers), I would just RMA this box. Else he can try plugging a high-speed or superspeed device in the box and send us the kernel log.

Let's just close this. I feared some regression in the interaction between the chromebox and the c920, but I don't think that's the case. More likely the panther USB controller has gone bad. Let's reopen if we see more. |
