Chromebook fails to establish connection with 2.4GHz WLAN

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS x86_64 8530.81.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/53.0.2785.103 Safari/537.36
Platform: 8530.81.0 (Official Build) stable-channel swanky

Example URL:
Can't establish connection, therefore no URL

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Closed the lid
2. Opened the lid to wake from sleep
3. Failed to automatically establish connection with 2.4GHz WLAN network

What is the expected behavior?
Automatically connect to 2.4GHz WLAN network

What went wrong?
Following message was displayed:
"Fehler bei Netzwerkverbindung

Fehler beim Herstellen einer Verbindung mit dem Netzwerk "xy": Außerhalb des Bereichs"

Which probably translates to:
"Network connection error

There was an error establishing a connection to network "xy": Out of range"

Did this work before? Yes The whole time until now

Chrome version: 53.0.2785.103  Channel: stable
OS Version: 8530.81.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

I do have the same problem since I upgraded to V53. I have powerwashed, disabled playstore, but alas the problem is still there.

The problem is gone on my Asus Flip. (In my case it only occurred when I
also had a VPN connection active when closing the lid)
