Dropped Frames on YouTube in full screen mode

Reported by tom19...@gmail.com, Sep 6 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/53.0.2785.89 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiujnShjAbk

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. As far as I know it only happens when the avc1.64002a codec is being used in full screen mode.
2. The dropped frames is not happening when I disable #disable-accelerated-video-decode in Chrome://flags.

What is the expected behavior?
Smooth playblack.

What went wrong?
A half-second/one second stutter that is really noticeable in full screen.

When I click on "Stats for nerds" you see the dropped frames adding up by +- 100/150 resulting in annoying stutters.

Did this work before? N/A

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? HTML5

Does this work in other browsers? N/A

With full screen i mean playing the video in 1080p 60fps.
Could you try with the --disable-zero-copy-dxgi-video command-line flag instead of using #disable-accelerated-video-decode ?

Comment 4 by tom19...@gmail.com, Sep 8 2016

I tried, but it didn't help.

I should also add that the audio of the video also goes out of sync the moment the dropped frames are happening (with or without the command-line flag btw).

tom19866@gmail.com, do you mean this issue only repro with hardware decoding? if yes, what graphic card are you using?
I use NVidia graphic card, I don't see this issue with Chrome 54.0.2840.14, drop rate is consistently at 0.5%, no visible stuttering is observed.

Comment 7 by tom19...@gmail.com, Sep 8 2016

I think yes?

It's hard to say at this point, because right now I don't have a spare graphics card laying around to verify if the problem is really the card.

I'm using a Geforce GTX 650 Ti with the latest drivers.

I tried to roll back to version 362.00 since people refer that as a stable driver, but sadly the dropped frames were still there.

It's funny since I never ever had any problems with my pc. Everything is up-to-date, temps are perfect, no strange cpu usage, games play perfectly and yet I get huge dropped frames on this particular youtube video.

And it does not happen with the vp9 codec. It seems it only happens when the video has the avc1.64002a codec. Really strange.

But the moment I disable #disable-accelerated-video-decode everything is okay again, no hiccups, everything butter smooth.

I wish I could be more of a help, but I don't know what to do right now.

So if you want more information of any kind, please say so. I'll do my best to try to help.

Comment 8 by tom19...@gmail.com, Sep 12 2016

So today I replaced my videocard with a GTX 750 Ti and the problem still persists.

What to do next? Is Chrome HW decoding bugged?

Comment 10 by tom19...@gmail.com, Sep 16 2016

Yesterday I did a full format of my SSD and after that the problem was STILL there.

That really tells that something is definitely wrong with Chrome's HW decoding.

Please look into this. If you need any further information, please let me know.

sandersd@, can you take a look? this issue seems specific to Geforce GTX 650/750 Ti. I don't see it repro on my NVidia Graphic card.
Tom: I have a GTX 750 Ti available, but no Windows 7 box to put it in. I will see about reproducing your issue in the near future.

In the meantime, some clarifications:
  - Is only fullscreen affected, or can you reproduce the behavior by explicitly selecting "1080p60" in the quality menu?
  - Do you have more than one attached display?
  - Does disabling/enabling Aero affect your result?
  - Does the issue reproduce with Chrome Canary?
  - Your GPU information lists:

      Disabled Features: rasterization
      Disabled Features: native_gpu_memory_buffers

Can you post the contents of chrome://version to help clarify those? (Ideally both that and chrome://gpu from Chrome Dev or Chrome Canary.)

Thanks!

tom19866@: I noticed while looking at these examples that MSE doesn't like the edit list very much. I've prepared some 30s samples of the 1080p30 version of the video, can you also report which (if any) of these exhibit the issue you described?

Comment 15 by tom19...@gmail.com, Sep 29 2016

Thanks a lot for giving this issue a serious examination.

Before you guys commented, I have been testing things out to reproduce the problem.

So far I've concluded that if I don't move my mouse while the video is playing everything is stutter free with no dropped frames.

But the moment I move my mouse and the youtube 'video player' starts to show up then the video is instantly dropping frames and starts to stutter heavily.

This means that the 'video player' is causing some interference which causes the video to drop frames. Very strange.

With Aero on (like sandersd asked) everything is smooth when I move the mouse around and there aren't any massive dropped frames anymore. There still are some frames dropped though. And when that happens the sound also stops for a mili second, like a hiccup, resulting in dropped frames again. Also very annoying.

Your samples are stutter free sandersd. With or without Aero enabled. Butter smooth!

I did not try Chrome Canary yet. I will try that out later.

I only have one display attached.

Yes, only fullscreen is affected with this particular codec.

I've just found out that if I watch any -> 1080p 60fps <- video (exlcuding the avc codec, which plays smooth in window mode) on youtube ( for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rql_F8H3h9E with the vp9 codec) fullscreen or not, both way they start to drop frames eventually. Like every 20 seconds or so you see the dropped frames adding up by 10, resulting in a short noticable stutter. This happens with both Aero on or off.

My Chrome version:

GpuProcessHostUIShim: The GPU process exited normally. Everything is okay.

If you guys need any more information, please let me know.

Tomorrow I'll try to test out the Canary version of Chrome to see if that makes any difference.
tom: Your recent results are consistent with an underpowered CPU. However, your system specs should be entirely adequate for this use case.

One clarification:
  - You describe audio sync issues. Do these recover over time?

The next step then is to explore possible performance issues:
  - Are there processes listed in the task manager that use a lot of CPU while playing back, or that have accumulated a large "CPU Time" total overall?
  - Does DPC Latency Checker (http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml) identify any problematic device drivers?

Thank you for the quick reply.
However, your system specs should be entirely adequate for this use case.
Indeed! I never ever have encountered problems besides this right now.

Never had a BSOD/weird errors, games play perfectly, temps are great. Anyway I'm not saying it could be my CPU, but I highly doubt it.

- You describe audio sync issues. Do these recover over time?

Yes, it only goes briefly out of sync when the youtube video player pops up when I move my mouse over the screen. The moment when I dont touch my mouse anymore and the video player starts to disappear everything goes back to normal again.

- Are there processes listed in the task manager that use a lot of CPU while playing back, or that have accumulated a large "CPU Time" total

In task manager I clicked 'Always on top' so I could see what the maxium usasge was when it stutters/dropping frames on ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiujnShjAbk ) in fullscreen and it never went above 10%. It bounced from 5% to 8% etc. Nothing major in my opinion.
When I didn't touched my mouse it was using only 1 to 2% CPU usage.

- Does DPC Latency Checker

The results: http://imgur.com/a/jxNDY

Don't hesitate to ask me anything. I'll try my best to help! We need to get to the bottom of this! :)

You might try launching chrome with --disable-extensions to ensure something isn't messing with your page.

I've read your question a bit to fast in my previous post, leaving not the correct answer for it.

The real answer to this question is: No. CPU usage is always on 0%

@dalecur

Just tried that, didn't help. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
I can safely say that turning Aero on solves the problem for the most.

Weird though that Chrome doesn't like Windows 7 Classic theme.

With the classic theme you also see a lot of tearing, while using Aero there is none.

Is there a way to turn on Aero while you are using the classic theme?

Since I always have a weak point for the classic theme. It's so easy on the eyes.

Are you guys also using Aero? I mean you should try the classic theme once and check the same video again. Most likely you will notice the dropped frames then.
One more thing. In the Chrome GPU log there are still some errors which I can't figure out how to solve them.

This is the error I'm talking about:

[2508:4028:1001/125016:ERROR:gpu_video_decode_accelerator.cc(365)] : HW video decode not available for profile 12

What causes this error? Is it bad? Is there a way to fix this error?
That error is normal (probably should not be labelled ERROR). It means that hardware decoding is not enabled for VPx content.

Comment 24 by tom19...@gmail.com, Oct 24 2016

Just a heads up, but every video plays okay again!

There is one thing though and right now in the GPU log I am seeing this error:

[3588:1296:1024/195111:ERROR:mf_helpers.cc(12)] : Error in dxva_video_decode_accelerator_win.cc on line 345

What does this mean? It's not coming from watching videos on Youtube.

If I watch a video on e.g. Liveleak then this error pops up in the log.

Does anyone know what's causing this?
