Issue description

Version: 52.0.2743.116 and 54.0.2816.0 beta (64-bit)
OS: Linux

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Go to https://cs.corp.google.com/search/?q=status%5C.New&m=100&type=cs

What is the expected output?

status.New has normal inter-letter spacing.

What do you see instead?

Big spaces between "status" and ".New".

Please use labels and text to provide additional information.

HTML of one of the examples:

<a href="/piper///depot/google3/net/rpc/go/rpc.go?q=status%5C.New&amp;l=1165&amp;ct=rc&amp;cd=1&amp;dr=C"> call.status = rpc<b>status.New</b>(code, msg)</a>

Doesn't happen on Firefox or on Mac.

Looks like a problem with how tab characters are rendered.

Kojii, would you mind taking a look?
