Cannot change volume of cast destination (e.g. Chromecast Audio) when casting tab

Reported by clo...@gmail.com, Aug 27 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/52.0.2743.116 Safari/537.36

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Navigate to a page that plays audio (e.g. http://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/eclectic24)
2. Cast the tab (in my cast to a group of 2 Chromecast Audio devices)
3. Discover that there is no mechanism of changing the volume of the destination device to which you cast the tab.

What is the expected behavior?
I expect to be able to change the volume.
This works fine from sites that have integrated cast support (e.g. Google Play Music) as opposed to requiring tab-level casting

What went wrong?
Even if the page that you are casting has its own in-page volume control, this is totally independent of the volume on the destination Chromecast device (and independent of the volume on your PC)

Did this work before? N/A

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? N/A

Chrome version: 52.0.2743.116 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

The details view in the Cast dialog should include a control for muting as well as a volume slider. Do you not see these? Could you attach a screenshot of what you do see?

Yeah my details view (for the group of 2 Chromecast Audio devices) in the Cast dialog does not have a control for muting or volume when casting a Tab. See attached.

I do see these controls when I am casting from a site that has integrated casting support (as opposed to casting a tab)

After updating to Chrome 53 (53.0.2785.89), I can now see the volume slider and mute control in the details view, so the problem is resolved with the new version of Chrome.

You know actually even in Chrome 53 I find that after stopping and restarting a cast a couple times, it reverts to the buggy state where the volume/mute controls are not there. Hopefully you will reopen this issue. Trying to isolate the steps to reproduce but they are a bit elusive.

With the cast detail dialog open, if I navigate in a separate tab to chrome://cast/#devices, then after loading that page or refreshing it a couple of times, the cast detail dialog will instantly change (while open) to show the volume/mute controls. But it still does not act in a consistently reproducible way.

Assigning to David to see if we can get a reliable repro.
I think this is the same as b/30364023

I guess we can close this once internal b/30364023 is fixed.

We have recently shipped a new implementation of media controls (in M62) that should be faster and more reliable. Please file a new issue if this is still occurring for you.
