Unexpected line-break with Helvetica Neue and display:inline-block

Reported by danielca...@gmail.com, Aug 19 2016

Issue description

Chrome Version : Version 52.0.2743.116 (64-bit)
URLs (if applicable) : https://jsfiddle.net/6h6fxygs/
Other browsers tested:
     Safari: OK Version 9.1.2 (11601.7.7)
    Firefox: OK Version 48.0.1
    Chrome: OK Version 51.0.2704.106 (64-bit)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Apply Helvetica Neue font
(2) Set the font-size to >= 14px
(3) Add spans inside a display:inline-block element
(4) Add whitespace before the closing span tags

What is the expected result?
Text of all sibling spans in a single line

What happens instead?
Text of spans after whitespace is shown in the next line

The issue doesn't happen if:
- the spans are wrapped in a span instead of display:inline-block
- smaller font-size is used

OS: OS X 10.11.6 (15G31)
