Sometimes, after signing into my Google account, Google Chrome opens a new window

Reported by 6po...@gmail.com, Aug 17 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/52.0.2743.116 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Visit https://accounts.google.com/.
2. Enter your username and your password.
3. Press enter.

What is the expected behavior?
Welcome message and my Google account settings displayed in the same tab where I entered my password.

What went wrong?
Sometimes, after I enter my password and I press enter, a new window opens with the welcome message from Google. In the old window, tab where I entered the password remains open. It's quite disturbing.

This only happens when I sign into my Google account. Signing into Twitter or Reddit, for example, doesn't trigger the opening of a new window.

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 52.0.2743.116 Channel: stable
OS Version:
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

Unable to reproduce the issue on Linux Ubuntu 14.04 using 52.0.2743.116, latest canary 54.0.2831.0 as per above steps.Observed that welcome message and Google account settings displayed in the same tab where I entered password.

I use Ubuntu 16.04. I don't remember if I encountered the same problem on Ubuntu 15.10.

I didn't try your recommendation just because the opening of a new window is pretty random so I may try 20 times or even more and nothing will happen. I found users reporting the same problem a couple of years ago on Google Chrome forums.
