Hard to tell cloud printers apart from local printers |
||||||||
Issue descriptionWhat steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Connect a USB printer to a computer, set it up. (2) Follow the "connect your classic printer" setup flow on https://support.google.com/cloudprint/answer/1686197?hl=en to set up the printer as a cloud printer. (3) Open print preview, see the same printer with the same name available under the "Local Destinations" as well as the "Google Cloud Print" sections. Select one or the other. What is the expected output? One the destinations sub-menu closes, the destination field has an icon and the name of the printer... the exact same icon + name whether one chooses the local printer or the cloud printer. It would be nice if the cloud printers have a different icon, so one can easily tell it is a cloud printer.

Can we just get a more cloudy printer icon and put that in? Here's my attempt at drawing one. :)

Assigning to Chrome browser team in case they plan on redesigning the print UI.

Searching for cloud on go/icons brings up some possibilities. thestig@ if you have a preference I can run it by bettes@ (our visual designer) and make the asset cuts for you. Maybe: https://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/material/system/1x/cloud_circle_black_24dp.png Would be great to get a screengrab of the current screen to see how the indicator would be helpful. All my printers are wireless at the moment!

On the topic of printer icons... We also have Privet printers that are printers discovered on the local network. Because they are on the local network, and not part of some cloud service, they are currently in the local printers section. This confuses many users who see Privet printers in Chrome's destinations list, but don't see them in their OS's printer listing. If we also have an icon for Privet printers, that would also help users tell them apart from local printers set up through the OS's normal printer installation workflow.

Chrome Beta ( bug 779591 ) merged all the printers into one list, now it is more confusing. Please see the picture attached.

This is the view from my home computer running M65 Canary, with some named edited. There is no way to tell "Cloud Printer" is in fact, a cloud printer. See the screenshot from bug 491989 for what it looks like with older versions, including M63 stable. |
