Linux/Intel: UI stops updating when maximized and not using system title bar

Project Member Reported by jkummerow@chromium.org, Aug 11 2016

Issue description

Version: M52, M53, M54, ToT (older versions probably too)
OS: Linux (Goobuntu Trusty / 14.04), KDE, desktop effects enabled.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) In chrome://settings, uncheck "Use system title bar and borders".
(2) Maximize Chrome window.
(3) Entire UI stops updating after a few seconds.

Hardware: Thinkpad X1 Carbon, both 2012 and 2016 models (Intel GPU).

--disable-gpu fixes it.
Turning off desktop effects fixes it.
Un-maximizing the Chrome window fixes it.
Minimizing and re-maximizing the Chrome window fixes it temporarily: I get about 3 seconds of reactiveness before the UI stops updating again.
There's no CPU load to speak of (1-2%) in either GPU or browser processes.
I've attached GDB and hit Ctrl+C; it looks like the GPU process is waiting in its message loop.

In "frozen" state, Chrome still reacts to input, but doesn't redraw its own window. E.g. when clicking on tabs, I can see the task bar entry change its text to the respective tab's title, but the tab isn't rendered (unless I minimize and un-minimize Chrome).

This probably affects a significant portion of Google employees and must be triaged right away. Who from the GPU team can try to reproduce this?

I'm CC'ing folks from Intel who we've been collaborating with, since they're probably concerned about issues with Chrome's stability on Intel GPUs.

Not sure how easy it is to upgrade to a more recent Mesa distribution, but we've been collaborating on Mesa 12.x, and at least our test suite is running reliably there.

I have newer kernel/xorg on my goobuntu workstation (same as glaptop). I'll try reproducing once I get in.

The bug sounds eerily similar to issue 636644 which is due to SGI_video_sync on Nvidia being blocked by the sandbox - that started happening after an nvidia driver update. In that bug it was possible to un-freeze the chrome window by switching to another workspace and then back to chrome (basically something that causes an expose event).

jkummerow@ can you try running with --disable-gpu-sandbox?
Cc: yang...@intel.com
--disable-gpu-sandbox does not help. Neither does --no-sandbox.

Comment 6 by batz@google.com, Aug 15 2016

I've been seeing this on my linux box w/ ratpoison. For me:
--disable-gpu-sandbox
does seem to help (at least I've not yet seen the issue since I restarted Chrome), though I still have massive docs issues where it'll not render unless I have something selected. I haven't tested --disable-gpu though.

Let me know if there's anything I can grab that'd help on this.
batz@ I think you're experiencing issue 636644 which affects nvidia gpus with the latest drivers on goobuntu. This bug relates to intel gpus.

sunnyps@ were you able to test if this is related to the sandbox issue?
Owner: vmi...@chromium.org
This shouldn't be related to the sandbox issue - that code path (GLX_SGI_video_sync) was nvidia only.

I've been getting the same problem as of very recently. (I switched from M57 which worked fine, to M60, which doesn't, so not sure which version exactly introduced it.)

It's a bit different in that I don't have the setting checked, and the UI recovers by itself within a minute (usually a few seconds). Other than that the symptoms are exactly the same.
