Feature request: Reduce font size in bookmarks and tabs. Makes it harder to read tab titles.

Reported by ianab...@gmail.com, Aug 6 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_4) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/53.0.2785.46 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open Browser
2. Look at Tabs and Bookmark Font Size
3.

What is the expected behavior?
Font size was smaller before for the tabs and menus and it is oversized.

What went wrong?
Not sure how it changed, but from what I can see in the chrome:flags, a reset to "material" seems to resize slightly smaller and make it more usable. To be clear, this is not the version of fonts on the page, but rather those in the bookmark area and on each tab.

Did this work before? Yes Before new version updated within the last few days.

Chrome version: 53.0.2785.46 Channel: n/a
OS Version: OS X 10.11.4
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

Thanks for the report. I am unable to reproduce the above issue on Mac 10.11.6 with chrome version - 53.0.2785.46.

Request you to please try resetting all the flags in chrome://flags and try by creating a new profile from chrome://settings ?

Thank you!

I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit. After update to 52.0.2743.82 (64-bit) I've got weird, totally huge fonts in the Chrome UI. My post about it: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/6YimPuoKyg4;context-place=forum/chrome None of the solutions, suggested on the web helped. Please, pay attention. This thing is making the browser totally unusable

The desktop is unity, I'm using HP 250 G4, screen resolution is 1366x768

Comment 4 by ianab...@gmail.com, Aug 8 2016

I had this issue when the update kicked in, so I downgraded to 51.x, and then just took the update to push me to Version 52.0.2743.116 (64-bit) on MAC OS El Capitan, 1920x1080, however it seems to not be occurring in this build. Obviously, I am not at 53.0.2785.46, which is where I saw it. Attachment is screen shot from my current build...if this comes back, I will post an update.

@rnimmagadda: Mac OS is not the only platform, where this bug has been observed. Also, it probably depends on desktop environment, gpu, screen resolution, etc. So, I guess, you're in hurry with ideas to close the issue.

Summary: Feature request: Reduce font size in bookmarks and tabs. Makes it harder to read tab titles. (was: Font size has been increased and is rendering bookmarks and tab labels un-usable)
I don't see any comment that has rendered bookmark and tab labels unusable. The size of the font has increased. This is an intentional change.

The most coherent comment I've seen is from productforums link from comment #2:
"""
when I have > 8 open tabs I just can't read their titles, and also it looks really ugly
"""

This is a legitimate concern. Unfortunately, I don't think that this is going to change in the near future. I searched Google for "chrome larger tab text" in an attempt to see what other users were saying about this issue.
https://www.google.com/search?q=chrome+larger+tab+text&oq=chrome+larger+tab+text&aqs=chrome..69i57.195j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

The top results were user complaints from 1-2 years ago that the tab text is too small. There is no perfect solution that will make everyone happy. The designers at Chrome have decided that this is the best approach for now.

I disagree with you. It's perfectly clear that this is a bug. Compare UI on the screenshot I've attached with UI of Chrome on OSX or Windows. Or with UI on the screenshot another user attached here? See the difference? It's obvious even to a child that this is not "made intentionally" by Google designers, frankly speaking I think you've made up this "theory". I understand that you guys here have a lot of interesting things to do and you are trying to fix essential stuff first, but this particular case looks like you are trying to ignore a _real_ issue. As I've said, it's obvious that this wasn't made intentionally for many reasons. One more of them is that fonts aren't bigger under other OS and even Linux distros. This bug makes tabs and bookmarks bar barely usable and creates a nightmarish user experience. Please, stop pretending that nothing is happening and saying that this nasty bug is really a "feature". Please, pay attention to this bug. I may provide detailed logs, video specs etc if needed.

Thank you guys for keeping ruining my favorite browser and ignoring issues. After Chrome was affected by this issue I've tried Chromium and it was ok. I thought everything was ok than but suddenly today I've got update to Version 52.0.2743.116 and fonts are screwed in the same way here too. How does it feel to ship bugs and pretending they're features on the issue board?

Comment 12 by aaxm...@gmail.com, Oct 5 2016

Specially for that guy who pretended he couldn't google any mentions that font size is too large. This issue has been observed earlier too. Looks like you've reintroduced a bug and unluckily a person with lack of interest to creating qualitative product was assigned to this issue here. A bit of links, just for example: http://askubuntu.com/questions/597804/how-do-i-reduce-the-font-size-on-tabs-in-chrome-in-ubuntu https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/yZi2_2YxfMY http://superuser.com/questions/1000853/ubuntu-14-04-google-chrome-menu-font-size-too-large And there're much more you can find, if you're not slacking off and pretending you can't see.

Comment 13 by aaxm...@gmail.com, Oct 5 2016

That guy's name is probably Eric. Take a look https://www.google.com.ua/search?q=ubuntu+chrome+tab+font+size&oq=ubuntu+chrome+tab+&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l5.8672j0j4&client=ubuntu&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 At least, please, make it adjustable, if you think that a lot of people love huge unreadable letters and you wanna make them able to get such

Comment 14 by aaxm...@gmail.com, Jan 30 2017

Guys, you definitely have a problem with those fonts. Earlier you made them so huge, that tabs became useless (since no information could fit a tab with such font size), now you've made some weird, I guess joke, or just introduced a bug instead of a bug. Please, see attachment. That's what I have after an update today. Guys, really?? Are you kidding me and other users? At first you make humongous fonts, now you make tiny fonts. Great. Please, make fonts at those parts adjustable, so no one would ever experience such problem again.

As with the previous comment, I've found that my Chrome UI fonts are all tiny now. This goes for at least the tabs, search, and menus.
I have the same issue on Chrome on Ubuntu 16.10. Fonts used to be too big, and now they are tiny - Chrome version 56.0.2924.87 - https://imgur.com/KSJmY5I

Comment 17 by aaxm...@gmail.com, Feb 13 2017

I'm afraid devs assigned to this prefer to slack off and pretend it's an "intentional change" (looks like they prefer to ignore the fact that this buggy pseudo intentional change is observed only on certain systems, what is, obviously, not the case for an intentional change)

Comment 18 by whwhw...@gmail.com, Dec 26 2017

why cant u google guys just make the UI font size customizable? is it really so hard?
Fonts and icons were too small on my hi-res laptop (Dell XPS13) running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I've added a command line option --force-device-scale-factor=2 and now icons are OK, but fonts in the toolbar and in tab names are HUGE.

Please just make this font customizable.
