selectiion does not copy to X11 buffer so that middle mouse button can paste, anymore

Reported by icanreal...@gmail.com, Aug 2 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/54.0.2815.0 Safari/537.36

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
while in linux, X11...

1. Select text from a webpage
2. try to paste with middle mouse button(MMB) (or LMB+RMB at the same time) [not ctrl+v !]
3.

What is the expected behavior?
the selected text was (automatically) copied upon selecting it and thus when MMB happens it would get pasted(eg. in shell)

What went wrong?
selected text does not get copied anymore(regression)
so, MMB pastes only whatever was in clipboard from before(if any) eg. whatever Ctrl+C copied

Does it occur on multiple sites: N/A

Is it a problem with a plugin? N/A

Did this work before? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? N/A

Chrome version: 54.0.2815.0 Channel: n/a
OS Version:
Flash Version:

looks like the following commit removed this feature:
6f1786b887a51f3fcd3cdeacfd9b455934c570ca

Does not have this issue: chromium-dev 54.0.2804.0_r923.5f2924f-1

then I upgraded to/has this issue: 54 .0.2814.0_r2922.7077c9c-1)

correction, the following(to which I upgraded and tested) definitely has this issue: 54 .0.2815.0_r2934.ca0e8af-1
still present in "latest" chromium(had to check):
Chromium	54.0.2817.0 (Developer Build) (64-bit)
Revision	b950062952a3834cf9f66358ae75899486c593eb-refs/heads/master@{#409384}
OS	Linux
JavaScript	V8 5.4.334
Flash

This actually works in the youtube search text field only. But it's probably due to their scripting?

It works in text fields, like the comment field here, but doesn't work with normal text on the webpages.
Well said #4 ! THanks :)
Reverting 6f1786b887a51f3fcd3cdeacfd9b455934c570ca does bring back the old behaviour - just tested.
