webview shows data:text/html,chromewebdata in addresser

Reported by maas36...@gmail.com, Aug 2 2016

Issue description

THIS TEMPLATE IS FOR FILING BUGS ON THE ANDROID SYSTEM WEBVIEW. GENERAL WEB BUGS SHOULD BE FILED USING A DIFFERENT TEMPLATE!

Device name: Sony C6603
Android version: 4.4.4
WebView version (from system settings -> Apps -> Android System WebView): 51.0.2704.81
Application:
Application version:

URLs (if applicable):

Steps to reproduce:

It appears that when a page is unable to load successfully and onReceivedError is called, then onPageFinished is called twice. The second time it shows the url "data:text/html,chromewebdata" in the address bar.

This is the closest I could find in the existing bugs, although it doesn't appear to be for webview:

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=630163&can=1&q=data%20text%20html&colspec=ID%20Pri%20M%20Stars%20ReleaseBlock%20Component%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20OS%20Modified

There are some discussions on the internet around this but no real solution, e.g..
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/34730843/android-web-view-onpagefinished-called-twice-after-onreceivederror

https://github.com/liveservices/LiveSDK-for-Android/issues/50

http://www.programcreek.com/java-api-examples/index.php?api=android.webkit.WebResourceRequest (Search for EMPTY_HTML)

Unfortunately, I do not have a public website where this can be reproduced consistently.

Expected result:

The address bar should not display data:text/html as the url

Actual result:

Your report says you're using Android 4.4 - is that correct? If so then you are *not* using WebView 51.0.2704.81 even if you have that installed (and you shouldn't have been able to install that) - Android versions older than 5.0 do not have an updatable WebView.

Does this happen on an Android 5.0 or later device with the current version of WebView? If this only happens on 4.4 then there's nothing we can do; webview isn't updatable there and so we can't fix any bugs.
Huh !Sorry.. Should never trust anyone else to "quickly" look up the device details. Let me get back to you on this one
Still waiting to hear if it is reproducible on 5.0 or later

I am getting no more responses on this one to confirm that it is reproducible on 5.0 or later. You can consider this closed from my end, will add more details if I ever hear anything
