Repeated Arial/Arimo 'f' characters are ugly due to subpixel positioning |
|||||||
Issue descriptionGoogle Chrome 52.0.2743.82 (Official Build) (64-bit) Due to subpixel positioning, repeated 'f' characters often look terrible with both Arial and (metric-compatible) Arimo at the 12.8px size that Gmail uses. See http://plexode.com/eval3/#s=aekVQXANJVQMbAx2QTk0fPU8BAZVGQkWZm5ydeKKkpARVRllVAVyaqKiJDkdCTkpNWhsBCEJTSkJNCA29VEJPVA5URsBHCByxspy0irwSEw8ZUVnRo6he0pwdEKbS5Emfoedxp6QdcgFKRR49A6ut9h9QR0dKIjBJoBfj+gDCgb9f8BhEFhcEhUHh8GgUSh0JicMiEUi8WhrCchydzkdqadBVS4fAZeAA -- the problem comes and goes depending on how the vertical strokes get snapped to pixels. This happens both with strong hinting settings and the light hinting that Chrome OS uses. 'ffffffffffffff' looks particularly bad. Interestingly, 'lllllllllll' and 'tttttttttttt' look okay. This has been ugly for a long time and I'm not sure if there's anything we can do about it.

(Just to mention it, not a problem on high-DPI displays.)

We first need to understand what's going on. With subpixel positioning we must use light hinting. Looks like we are doing something else. Also, check to see if there are any ligatures involved?
