[devtools] opening snippets makes devtools slow

Project Member Reported by kayce@google.com, Jul 28 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/52.0.2743.82 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open Chrome 52.
2. Open DevTools.
3. Type something into console. Nice and smooth.
4. Create a new snippet. Watch the lag.
5. Try to resize the drawer or some panes. DevTools is slow.

What is the expected behavior?
DevTools stays snappy and smooth.

What went wrong?
Slowness.

Did this work before? Yes

Chrome version: 52.0.2743.82 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.11.6
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

Appears to be working in Canary.

Is this also present in Chrome Beta? If a regression was introduced in 52, I'm not currently seeing it in Canary either.

Yup. Also in Beta. Made a GIF.

What model Mac are you using? I am having trouble reproducing the lag on mine.

Not sure if it's helps, but here's a timeline recording I get when opening different Snippets on Stable.

The issue can be reproduced on stable by using a Mac, having sources open to a snippet, and having the sources sidebar NOT be set to snippets. It doesn't appear to be present in canary.

Bisect: https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+log/717ee19a82bde7395ea138843b09a826b5681463..bd745c89802067c732b9858960cb4834e4b6b10d

It appears to be related to the flexbox change.

Hmm, I thought I fixed that in e31affc47d4167415327e54c48da086e9152ee10, which was merged to 52.0.2743.71. But I also had 7f6ee2762d0e5617c17ad828d6353424ca59bacd which was only merged to 53.0.2785.17

Can you reproduce this in Beta (v53)?
I can get it to lag on 51 and 52 but not 53.

OK, then it was probably fixed by the latter checkin I assume. At this point, it is too late to fix anything for M52 I understand (see e.g. https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=629491#c15)
