will not let me change search engine at all

 I want this gone. I cannot change the search engine at all

It is unclear what OS you are but you should be able to change the Search Engine under the settings.

If you have done this and changed the setting to another provider already and issues still remain please comment on this issue. I'm marking it as needs feedback and we will close it after a few days if we do not hear back from you.
