Chrome won't open following download of newest version

Reported by trevor...@gmail.com, Jul 22 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/51.0.2704.106 Safari/537.36 OPR/38.0.2220.41

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. downloaded google chrome for linux - both versions
2.
3.

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
I kept getting notified my google chrome was out of date. So i downloaded the new version to try to update it, now it won't open. When I click the google chrome web browser in the menu it won't open. I tried typing in google-chrome in the command line and get an error message: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error

Did this work before? Yes chrome worked before I installed the new version

Chrome version: 51.0.2704.106 Channel: n/a
OS Version:
Flash Version:

I don't know what version i had before or how to go back to it. I'm new to linux and now i can't access the web on chrome or even get chrome to open.
