cloud printer virtualprintersetup.exe cannot be installed

Reported by hugo.lyp...@gmail.com, Jul 19 2016

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/51.0.2704.106 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. download virtualprintersetup.exe
2. install
3. look at debug.log in C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Cloud Printer\28.0.1489.0

What is the expected behavior?
install virtual cloud printer driver

What went wrong?
in debug.log it says:
[0719/090401:WARNING:setup.cc(263)] File is missing: XPSSVCS.DLL
[0719/090401:ERROR:setup.cc(305)] Unable to add printer driver
[0719/090401:ERROR:setup.cc(402)] Unable to install driver.
[0719/090401:INFO:setup.cc(543)] The specified printer driver was not found on the system and needs to be downloaded. HRESULT=0x80070bcb

in c:\windows\system32 there is
xpsservices.dll but not XPSSVCS.DLL

Did this work before? Yes before june

Chrome version: 51.0.2704.106 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

looks like XPSSVCS.DLL got renamed to xpsservices.dll in win10

commit 02d5cc9941cf621f195871e960a82928a19a3076
Author: pastarmovj <pastarmovj@chromium.org>
Date: Mon Dec 05 17:55:24 2016

Resurrect the cloud printer driver.

This CL relands a working version of the printer driver, stripped of all
32bit pre Win 7 related parts.

Thios CL also fixed the installation problem for Win 10.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your patience!

I am attaching an early test version for the bravest of you to try. It should work on Windows 7,8,10 *64BITS ONLY*. Please bare in mind that this is not an official build and it is signed with test developer keys. Therefore DON'T use this in production environment but only try it on a test workstations to give us feedback if it works for you. You are doing this on your own and no official support or liability is assumed beyond us using your feedback to fix bugs. If your computer bursts into flames or opens a black hole as a result of using this test version don't blame us (none of these is the expected outcome though). I will remove the attached file after a few days tops to avoid that people get it from here by coincidence after the release. Eventually the whole thing will be packaged into proper installer as it used to be and will be auto-updated as usual.

Instructions for use for the test version:
1. Download and extract the files in the archive to your hard drive.
2. Start the install.bat script to install the driver. You will need administrator privileges to complete this. It will end with a message stating the result success or failure.
3. If the install is successful try the driver.
4. Use the uninstall.bat script to remove the driver. Please remember to do this before you install the release version.

If anything fails please upload the debug.log file that should be created in the installation folder.

We are planning to only provide the 64 bit version of the driver with this update. If you are running Windows 10 32bits please let us know to gauge the interest and decide if we should add it too.

doesn't work for me. i attached the debug.log

I'm on Windows 10 Pro 64 Bits. Version: 1607. Build: 14393.447
Thanks for the feedback!

I think the error you are seeing is due to the self-signed certificate used in this build which Windows prefers to not trust. It seems we might have to wait for the properly signed builds to get you to test it (unless you have developer mode enabled which I won't recommend because we are interested in having this driver to run without it).
Could not install on Win10 X64. "A problem was encountered while trying to add the driver to the store." Screenshot is attached.

Even with test signing enabled (bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON, reboot) it does not work. I tried to run install.bat from a command line started as Administrator, here is the debug.log output.

Re. C112:

Right it's still the same error code. I believe it just won't work with automatic install until it is properly signed.

Can you verify that in your %Windows%\INF folder in the setupapi.dev.log file towards the end you see lines like those:

sig: Success: File is signed in Authenticode(tm) catalog.
sig: Error 0xe0000242: The publisher of an Authenticode(tm) signed catalog has not yet been established as trusted.

Manually selecting "install" from the right-click menu on the inf file for the driver should let you to install it though and then the installer should succeed.

If you decide to attempt that you should then clear your driver cache by using the pnputil utility. First use it with the "-e" flag to find the internal name of the cached inf file and then with "-f -d oemXXX.inf" to clear it.
Something similar:

! sig: Verifying file against specific (valid) catalog failed! (0x800b0109)
! sig: Error 0x800b0109: A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider.

...

!!! sig: Catalog signer is untrusted. No error message will be displayed as client is running in non-interactive mode.
!!! sig: Driver package failed signature validation. Error = 0xE0000247

Now the correct file - just the relevant setupapi.dev.log part.

I do not see any installed Google printer after installing the INF file. The `pnputil -e` shows the following (class is "printers"):

Published name : oem29.inf
Driver package provider : Google
Class : Tiskárny
Driver date and version : 12/01/2016 57.0.2939.0
Signer name : Unknown

Setup log, some INF is missing - same as seen in earlier log.

My PC is running Windows 10 32-bit.
Thanks for all the feedback guys. It is highly appreciated and helps us move faster with the solution (which is still meant to be a Xmas gift ;) )! :)

Please spare your time trying this version anymore we are working on the feedback we got from you and our own reproduction locally. The reason we didn't see the same problem at first was that our test machines are all running in developer mode which is much more permissive in terms of proper signing. Stay tuned for new test version in the coming days.

I hope you are going to make a driver available for Win 10 32 Bit soon, so I can use it on my Virtualbox machine?

Thanks for your efforts.

Any news on this problem, Its spreading as windows 10 updates breaks "Google Cloud Print" driver. We heavily rely on this driver, all of our printer estate is GCP. Appreciate your efforts. Willing to try any driver updates for you to help.

Issue 672551 has been merged into this issue.
Sorry for the long silence here. We are trying to figure the proper to solve the signing issue. We have now a solution which we believe should work for everyone and I hope to be able to post a new test version here in the next 24h. Thank you for your patience!
Getting the full MS certification that will allow completely silent installation will take longer due to legal requirements, but we have found an acceptable solution for the time being. The installation process will allow Windows to present the driver confirmation dialog if silent installation is not possible. You can inspect the signature of the driver and verify that it is signed with the proper official Google keys and eventually confirm the installation.

For unattended installation the administrators will have to install the Google software signing key in the "Trusted Publishers" keystore at least during the installation. The key should not be needed for the driver to continue to operate.

We will be happy to get one more round of "prerelease" testing before we go with the final packaging steps. Please try the attached version if you have a test machine and let us know if it works for you. Either way providing the debug log will be greatly appreciated. Same disclaimer as last time - this is not an official release and no guarantees are made for it.
No go for me... ran as administrator and nothing happened.

Re comment #128: Did you run install.bat (which can elevate to admin for you)? Seems like you have run the installer executable with no parameters directly.
seems to have installed for me. I did notice that the install.bat didn't like being in my downloads folder which is somewhat deep and has spaces in it.

The moment I moved all files to c:\temp and ran it from there it worked fine.
Thanks for the feedback!

Re #131: The install.bat is only a temporary wrapping around the installer and will eventually be replaced by a self-contained installer app, so it has some shortcomings like the one you discovered (a pair of quotes in the right place would have went a long way). :)
Worked for me on one machine so far, will roll this out to others. Make sure that existing Google cloud print is removed from add/remove programs as it didn't work until I removed existing one first. Also ran it from an admin CMD prompt with short folder path i.e. D:\TEST_gcp_driver\
Works fine! i can print again!

Retry installing with UI if silent installation is unsuccessful.

Until the driver is not signed with the proper Microsoft cert from
the WHQL program or Google's cert is added as a 'Tristed Publisher'
installation can not be performed unless the user confirms that they
trust the driver issuer.

Installed on Win10 64bit, but cannot print, I get an error "Could not convert to PDF".
Re #139: This is expected. The version we uploaded here is 64bit only. On Windows 7 you can still use the existing public version without any issues in either 32 or 64 bits. We are working on providing both 32 and 64 bit versions again but in order to not slow down the major population currently experiencing the problem we are rushing to get the 64 bit version out first and catch up with the 32 bit version right after that.

Re #140: This seems to be an issue inside the way Chrome sends the data up to the cloud print service. I would suggest you report this as a separate issue as this bug here handles the installation issues which you seem to not have given that you were able to use the virtual printer. Thanks for reporting this nevertheless!
I installed the test on one of my win10 64 systems and tested. It worked and printed. However, I now am getting error "Cannot convert to PDF" on all my other clients (windows 7).

No go for me... ran as administrator and nothing happened. Aditionaly today I cannot print from chrome, I get the same error of all, "Could not convert to PDF"

I should add that printing through Chrome browser directly appears to work. It's just the other Windows systems using the virtual print driver.
I think there is a new issue now that started with the last round of Windows updates that took place last Tuesday (December 13, 2016) nothing prints. Now I just get a "Could not convert to PDF." error. So now I cannot print even from older machines that had Google Cloud Printer already installed.

In other words, the Google Cloud Print driver for Windows used to work on my older machines like Server 2008r2. That stopped working on Wednesday right after the Windows updates.

I will try to install the TEST version from #127 above and report back.
Update:
It looks like the regular driver can no longer be installed in Server2008 if it was updated this past Tuesday.

I was able to install the latest TEST driver on same machine.

But when I try to print, I get the "Could not convert to PDF." error.

I think this is a new issue. :-(

I can now install however i now get failed to conver to pdf
I am also getting the "Could not convert to PDF." error. It just began yesterday after a windows update. Is there a seperate issue that handles this new bug?
I concur #150

"Could not convert to PDF" issue that popped up yesterday on my Server2012 led me to attempt to install on my Win10 machine. That failed installation led me here.

I have many users working remote from Chrome OS. Remote Desktop Print driver is of no use when you are accessing a server from Chrome.. Cloud printer was the solution to that. This will be an inconvenience for sure.

My workaround at the moment is to print from my applications to CutePDF, move the resulting PDF into Google drive, then printing from Chrome browser to my cloud enabled printers. (basically, just doing what the print driver does manually).

I will also try test from #127 on my 2012 server and come back with results, although unfortunately I don't anticipate different results.. :/
Ok i tried to uninstall and reinstall but now i cannot install although it does show up in program and files just not applications
Re: #150 I think the same, because I updated my win10 yesterday and today I begin to have the problem "Could not convert to PDF" error. :(
Please lets keep the discussion here on the installer issue for win 10. It seems indeed the other bug has to do with some other change that has happened in the last two days. We will investigate the other one ASAP too but let's use this one to discuss only the installation issue on Windows 10 with updates.

For the other issue please star and follow the bug mentioned above http://crbug.com/674395

Thank you all for the cooperation once again!
I can confirm that it installed on Windows 10 with all Windows updates installed! Yay!!!

Change "Google" to "Google Inc." in the inf file for the cloud printer.

This change makes the manufacturer coinside with the signing authority.
This is only a cosmetic change and has no implications for the driver.

Issue 675365 has been merged into this issue.
I cannot understand that why Google is not able to make a solution.
Immediate attention of Google Programmers are required so that Google Cloud
Printer could be installed in Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit. Taking so much time
for any solution from Google is not expected.
The 32 bit version of the driver has also been updated and the driver packaging is ready too. We will do one final round of internal testing and get the fixed version out for new installations first. If this goes well we will also release the new version for auto-update for existing installations next.

Hi everyone, while we are working through the formalities to make the official download available I though I will give you the chance to try it out here also for 32 bits and let us know if works well for you.

This version should work on anything from Win 7 to Win 10 both 32 and 64 bits.

I'm using windows10 64bit with latest updates and it's working fine.

Thanks!
Thank you so much. This download works perfect with Windows 10 pro 64bit.
Many, many many thanks for getting me out of trouble with this major problem.
Keep up the good work.
Nothing happened with my Windows 10 pro 64b.... :(
Status: Fixed (was: Started)
The fixed version just went live at its official location here https://tools.google.com/dlpage/cloudprintdriver

Happy holidays! :)
Well done!!! Happy Holidays to you and yours!
If anyone needs direct access to the installer for mass installation it can be reached here https://dl.google.com/dl/cloudprint/57.0.2959.0/virtual_printer_install.exe

Remember that if you want to push this for unattended installation you will need to at least temporarily add the Google code signing certificate to the "Trusted Publishers" machine keystore for the time of the installation.
The Virtual Printer has installed on my Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit.
It didn´t work for my, both Win7 32b and Win 10 64b. I attached the printscreen. "Error 0x80070705". Driver unknowned

You seem to be experiencing the same issue since the first version. If you still have the last zip file, can you try to right click on the inf file and select the install option. Does this work for you? It won't install the whole driver but the question is if this step also produced the same error.
I have the last zip file, I tried click on the inf file and click on the install option... The error now is: "The hash doesn't exist. It's possible that it´s broken or damage"... I attached the printscreen... Thank you very much for your attention.

One thing that I notice is the timestamp of the inf file is just a few minutes behind the log file while the cat file which basically carries its signature is much older. Can it be that you have manually altered that file or some other application or possibly even virus is messing with the file. Can you please upload the inf file as well?
Yes, here it go...
gcp_driver.inf

I diffed you file against the original and there is one change in this line:

%ManufacturerName%=Google Inc.,NTx86,NTia64,NTamd64,NTx86.6.0,NTia64.6.0,NTamd64.6.0

which should have been:

%ManufacturerName%=Google,NTx86,NTia64,NTamd64,NTx86.6.0,NTia64.6.0,NTamd64.6.0

Could it be that you edited this file manually?

Either way try to replace it with the file I attached (mind you the file I am uploading is a replacement for the older version you are testing with). Try to copy it over the one you have and to do the inf installation again.

Ok, far fetched, but can you try to move this folder over to some place on the c drive and make sure there are no spaces in the name of the folder and run the install from there.

None of this should be needed for the final installer but now we are trying to investigate your case on the one version that gives the must feedback for us to ponder upon.

Hi everyone.

I have been following this thread for several weeks and was excited thinking that this issue was about to be solved. There hasn´t been any update though since Dec 23rd. Are you all still trying to find the solution?

I installed today the service on a Windows 10 64 bit machine from the web directly and it worked, but it still fails on a Windows 10 32 bit box. Both with the latest updates.

Thanks and cheers.

Re #186: Hi, the driver is expected to work well on both 64 and 32 bit Win 10 installations. Can you please locate the file debug.log which should reside in <program files x86>\Google\Cloud Printer\57.0.2959.0\debug.log and attach it here so that we can investigate why is it failing on your machine.
Any ETA when it will be signed by the proper Microsoft cert from the WHQL program?
There is no ETA about this at the moment. This is not an engineering issue at this point and is pending legal work.

i cand find this zip file!!!
There is no zip anymore for testing. Simply use the official published version on https://tools.google.com/dlpage/cloudprintdriver

The cloudprinter page at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/cloudprintdriver still indicates the download is not suitable for Windows10

>>Requires Google Chrome and Windows 7, Vista or XP with XPS Essentials Pack.

this is kind of confusing ...

Thanks for pointing this out. Indeed the page does not list any Windows version newer than 7. I will see how this can be changed. Also XP is not supported by Chrome and respectively the cloud print driver anymore.
